In this document, topics for consideration include: 1. Popularity of this new sport/Need for new course 2. Physical benefits/ Appeal of diverse participants 3. Financial incentives. 4 . Support of local physical education program at the area's schools in and around Palm Beach Gardens .. Disc Golf is one of the fastest growing sports in our country today. A new course would be a perfect addition to the already existing course here in Palm Beach Gardens. A new course would attract players from not onl y Palm Beach Gardens and surrounding communities, but outside visitors bringing in considerable additi on a l revenue to our businesses . The ongoing fitness boom finds more and more people t aki ng up recreational activities in an effort to improve health and quality of life. Disc golf provides upper and lower body conditioning, aerobic exercise, and pr omotes a combination of physical and mental abilities that allow very little risk of physical injury. Concentration skills increase by mastering shots and negotiating obstacles. Players of limited fitness levels can start slowly and gradually increase their level of play as fitness improves. Scheduling is also flexible ; a round takes one to two hours, and may be played alone, eliminating the difficulty of scheduling tee times. And as in traditional golf, disc golfers find themselves "hooked;" increasing the likelihood of frequent participation. Financial advantages of a Disc Golf course are: 1. Low construction cost for a new, high interest sport 2. Once built, maintenance is next to nothing. 3. The Community has a constructive, free, recreational activity. Perhaps the greatest attribute of the sport is the e>.:pense-or rather, the lack of it A professional quality disc costs Jess than $15, and it only takes one for basic play. As aPE Teacher, I have taught many other PE Teachers in Palm Beach County this booming sport through School Board Workshops. Many teachers have already included Disc Golf in their curriculum. Furthermore, as the Athletic Director at Crestwood Middle School, I see how important it is that we are a b le to offer this sport to the community because it's both a non-traditional sport and a lifelong sport It appeals to students and other members of the community who would ordinarily not be involved in mainstream sports. A state of the art, well designed course will cost under $50,000.00 to build. This is a small amount for a life time activity that will benefit so many people for years to come, with relatively low maintenance cost to the facilities.
