MEMORANDUM
Community Services Department
The Palm Beach Gardens Community Services Department has been associated
with Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful since 2005 in regard to several Keep
America Beautiful programs.
1. The Recreation Division has been involved in the Coastal Cleanup in the
fall and has gathered volunteers to clean nearby beaches.
2. The Parks Division held the Keep America Beautiful Great American
Cleanup for past three years in various endeavors throughout the
community. They have included cleanups, tree plantings and renovations.
3. Holds annual Tree Day at the Greenmarket and Plant a Tree program as
part of the KAB Beautification initiatives.
4. The Parks Division secured mini grants from Keep Palm beach Beautiful
for their efforts in the Great American Cleanup to reimburse expenditures
for these events.
5. The Parks Division led the initiative to recycle in the parks and held an
informational Recycling Day at the Greenmarket last year.

Suggestions for Community Beautification considerations:
Plantings:
Low maintenance, low water need, local species, low profile (not tall growing).
Should not produce 'droppings' that stain driveways and cors,
Must be low profileat the ends of driveways, or street corners to NOT obstruct visibility.
Remove dying branches, and fallen branches.
Remove tree bracing.
Architectcrol:
Visual screening around air conditioning equipment, cooling towers, transformers, trash, back flow
valves, and fire protection connections.
Accessible to handicapp ed...... exceed ADA minimum requirements
Bike racks
Lighting:
Energy efficient, 'true" color, time-of day, occupancy seasor, photo controlled.
Obviously, capable of surviving hurricane winds,

Recommend water falls / fountains ought to be a NEGATIVE when scoring because we are suppose
to be in o dry season, a11 year.
Use re-cycled moterials ought to score more points.
Accessible to handicapped ...... more than ADA minimum requirements.

Memphis City Beautiful Commission
Celebrates Beautiful Businesses
(Memphis, Tenn) -The Memphis City Beautiful Commission is hosting the ISm
Annual Beautiful Business Awards on Thursday. June 29 at Memphis Botanic
Gardens. This year's awards drew 170 entries, the highest number of
businesses to enter in the history of the event Awards will be presented in 27
categories and include commercial, institutional, residential and industrial
properties. Members of the Commission judged each property with one or more
on-site visits. Each winning location receives a plaque for interior display and an
outdoor sign for exterior display. Sponsors of this year's event are The
Commercial Appeal, First Tennessee Bank and Friends of City Beautiful.
"we are really excited about the response to this event" said Eldra White,
Executive Director of Memphis City Beautiful. "The overall appearance of our
city depends on individuals and businesses who demonstrate on a daily basis
their commitment to making Memphis the best city it can be. I think it shows how
much our business community cares about our city and how we look to residents
and visitors. We are honored to present these awards to the best of the best"
In addition to the awards in the 27 competitive categories, special awards include
Landscaper of the Year, the Commissioners' Award of Excellence and the
Mayor's Award of Excellence. Participating businesses are invited to a reception
at 5:30 p.m. in Hardln Hall, with the awards ceremony to follow. For more

JUDGING AND AWARDS
Representatives of the Memphis City Beautiful Commission will judge
entries from Friday, June 2 until Noon Monday, June 5,2006. An award
will be presented to the winning entry in each category. An outdoor sign
will be placed at each winning location from July through mid September
2006. Judges reserve the right to make no awards in a category and to
make special awards as deemed necessary.
LANDSCAPER OF THE YEAR is a new award that recognizes the
landscaping company or person that has the most winning clients in any
of the categories.
MAYOR'SAWARD OF EXCELLENCE will be presented to the business that
best exemplifies an overall positive impact on the City of Memphis.
HALL OF FAME includes Memphis businesses that have won a Beautiful
Business Award for three (3) consecutive years. These businesses are
automatically entered into the Hall of Fame. A permanent plaque
featuring alL Hall of Fame winners is on display in the lobby of City Hall.
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING PROPERTIES I

The mlssion of the Beautification Council is to ensure that the City of
uVlnter Haven is a premier city through recognition of beautification
mjects.
Landscaping Improvement
This category focuses on the front yard and landscape
improvements. Selection will emphasize year-round visual
appeal and environmental considerations.
Structural Improvement
This category focuses on exterior structural Improvements.
Selection will emphasize the overall visual effect of the
structural improvements.
Selection Criteria
Overall, selection will be based on the outside appearance of the
structure and the landscaping grounds of the yard, as seen from the
street. Winners will be selected based on the following:
Effort rather than cost
Creativity and effort combined
Tasteful landscaping, including but not limited to trees, shrubs
The property must be well maintained. . Structural improvements

Any owner or renter of a residential or commercial property located
within the greater Winter Haven area and visible by the general
public, can nomlnate their own property or another property by
submitting an application to a participating partner.

LANDSCAPE BEAUTIFICATION AWARD
NOMINATION FORM
Nominatio~~ are being sought for the best examples of landscape beautification efforts made by
residents and business owners of properties in Coral Gables. Anyone may nominate any
residential or commercial property in the City, regardless of ownership. Deadline for submission
is December 3 1,2008.

Give a brief description of the property landscaping. Attach any additional supportive
information.
Attach 2-5 photographs (no larger than 8”x 10”). Digital image files in addition to the photos
will be accepted. Photos should show the street view of the nominated properties as this is what
will be judged. All submitted materials become the property of the City of Coral Gables and can
not be returned.

The Commfflee deslgns and recommends landmatks to the Town CouncH, such a8 the

The Committee sponsors a qwrterly Beautification Award to rscognize prqMy owners in resldentlal and commercial categories who have recently improved the aesthetics of their
property. (See photos of recent winners below.) For the 4th quarter awards, the Comminee sponsors a Holiday Decorating Event for homes and businesses.
