species’ of plants & animals

•Property serves to protect environmentally sensitive lands
including native plants & wildlife, water resources (surface
water, wellfields & the aquifer), & historic resources
•Protects area from urban sprawl

cypress, pine flatwoods and hammocks
•Backfilled ~30 miles of canals and ditches to improve habitats &
hydrology, hold water longer & add to base flows of the Lox River

Issue: Parking Lot Lighting
•ERM does not support parking lot lighting and urges
reconsideration of including this element
•Site open from sunrise to sunset
•Lights not consistent with International Dark Skies efforts
•No lighting on any of 36 sites that ERM manages
•No lights on ~4 mile stretch of the Beeline Highway ROW, from
PGA Boulevard to Caloosa West entrance
•Frenchman’s Forest Natural Area has visitor use with no lighting
•PB Parks & Rec. Dept. has removed lighting in many of the
existing parks at PBSO’s request, as they have reports of lights
attracting & encouraging unwanted behavior
•Modifying UDLC (Land Development Code) to no longer require
lights in parks that are only open from dawn to dusk
International Dark Sky Association
•Light pollution =
inappropriate or
excessive use of light
•Can have serious
environmental
consequences for
humans, wildlife, and our
climate
•Goal is preservation and
protection of the natural
nighttime environment
and our heritage of night
skies for present and
future generations
Summary
•Excited to complete project for
public benefit and community
improvement
•Grant dollars leveraged
•If Town insists on lights, we will
install 2 solar parking lights
mounted on 12’ poles, but want to
be clear that this is not consistent
with other natural areas facilities
nor does it set any precedent for
other projects
•Thank you for your consideration
and collaboration
