HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes EAB 080801From Eric Jablin to 799 -4281 at 8/27/01 1:11 PM Pg 002/002 CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS EDUCATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD August 8, 2001 The meeting was called to order 7:00 p.m. Present at the meeting were: Wayne Anderson, Ann Berg, Jim Panoch, John Gardner, Nancy Laurie, Eileen Gerber, Jan Porter, Leslie Millar, Ron Sadaka, Eric Jablin There were no minutes to approve. There were not Committee reports. The guest speaker was Wayne Gent, Area 5 Supervisor and Dan Smith, Principal of Watkins Middle. Mr. Gent told the members that there were 26 schools in area 5 and that the next couple of years the budget would be very tight. When asked about all the administrative moves, Mr. Gent said it was the decision of our new Superintendent, Art Johnson. When asked about the magnet schools, he informed the board that they were being looked at to see if they were doing what they were supposed to do. He talked about deregulation and the flexibility it would give the schools when determining their budgets. When asked about the decision to keep some of the sixth grades in the elementary schools, he said the decision was made because of excess capacity in some schools and over crowding in others, and that it was a pilot programs and would be studied. The district is trying to lower class sizes in K -2 by cutting aids. Mr. Gent was asked about how much authority he had at area 5. His response was he did what Art Johnson told him to do. He did say that they did have meetings once a week where he could give his ideas. Mr. Smith told the board what some of his plans were for this year. He plans to make the school more attractive and to have the teachers meeting in groups to better coordinate efforts. Mr. Gent was informed about the partnerships that Leslie Millar had organized, and how the schools did not utilize most of these partnerships. Mr. Gent asked of a list and that he would make the schools aware of any partnerships. It was discussed on how to get more high schools students on the board. There were no SAC Member Reports. Members chose their SAC assignments for 2001 —2002. The next meeting was set for Wednesday, September 12, 20001 and the meeting was adjourned at 9:15p.m.
