CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS
EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD
May 9, 2001
The May 9, 2001 Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education
Advisory Board was called to order at 7:00 P.M. in the City Manager's Conference
Room of the Municipal -- Complex located at 10500 North Military Trail, Palm Beach
Gardens, Florida.
The roll was called, and the following members were found- to be in attendance:
Wayne Anderson, Anne S. Berg, John Gardner, Judith Hanrahan, Murt Kakli, Nancy
Krause- Laurie, Vice -Chair Leslie Millar, James Panoch, and- Charlotte Schiff. Jan
Porter arrived at 7:10 p.m. Also in attendance was Helen Zientek, who arrived at 7:10
p.m.
School Board member Harry Fix was guest speaker and- provided a presentation.
Committee Reports
Boundaries Committee and Curriculum Committees had no reports. Jim Panoch
presented the School Board report.
SAC Member Reports
SAC member reports were given. Wayne Anderson reported on several items that
were discussed at Allamanda Elementary, including that SAC money would be spent
on planners and they would try to get more parents to attend, discussion of needs
assessments for the school improvement plan, and plans for a part-time band. Anne
Berg reported a long discussion -at the meeting at Palm Beach - Gardens Elementary of
the reading program, which was being reevaluated, and the possibility of adopting the
program used at Timber Trace. Wayne Anderson presented- information regarding a
group of investors who could provide funds for a reading teacher if matching funds
could be obtained-. - Anne Berg also reported other discussion on dress code,
Sportsman's Club, and a recent carnival. Ron Sadaka reported for Timber Trace
Elementary. There were no reports for Grove Park Elementary or H. L. Watkins
Middle School. Judy Hanrahan reported for Watson B. Duncan Middle School and
Jan Porter reported for School of the Arts Middle School. Nancy Krause Laurie
® reported there had been no meeting at William T. Dwyer High. Jim Panoch reported
for Suncoast High. Jan Porter reported for Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the
Arts. There was no report for Inlet Grove High School (formerly North Tech). Vice
Chair Leslie Millar commented it bothered her that Laurie Beneno had written a letter
asking for money from this Board, and requested that she be told to go on AOL under
hot topics for school education where there were millions of dollars for grants.
Old Business
Paulette Burdick's Legislative Meeting Synopsis was discussed. Vice Chair Leslie
Millar and Wayne Anderson commented on teacher recruitment and retention, which
were two issues on which Ms. Burdick was working in Tallahassee. The Legislative
Report was passed among the members.
There were no comments regarding the crossing guard issues for Grove Park
Elementary resulting from NorthMil Plaza.
Wayne Anderson was elected as Chair for the coming year.
New Business
A suggestion was made to invite a Senator to be guest speaker. An Acknowledgment
Committee was suggested by Ron Sedaka, and making presentations at City Council
meetings for outstanding performance by students, teachers, and volunteers was
discussed. Charlotte Schiff indicated that Community Awareness Network of PGA
National (CAN) had money they would like to give to education, and the idea that
CAN sponsor a project would be presented at the CAN meeting the next day.
The next meeting was announced for June 13, 2001, to be held as a social event to
close the year.
Charlotte Schiff objected to the amount of money being spent by the School Board for
recruitment of teachers. Discussion of this issue ensued.
