CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS
EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD
April 11, 2001
The April 11, 2001 Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education
Advisory Board was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by Chair Scott Blake in the City
Manager's Conference Room of the Municipal Complex located at 10500 North
Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The roll was called and the following members were found to be in attendance: Chair
Scott Blake, Wayne Anderson, John Gardner, Ilene Gerber, Judith Hanrahan, Murt
Kakli, Nancy Krause- Laurie, Vice Chair Leslie Millar, James Panoch, and Jan Porter.
The following changes were requested to the minutes of the March 14, 2001 meeting:
To change Guest Speaker Dr. Art Johnson, Superintendent to Guest Speaker Dr. Art
® Johnson, Superintendent Elect, and to add at the end of the minutes a comment
thanking Ilene Gerber for her work to get $3,000 donation for the Safety Patrol at
Allamanda. Motion was made by Wayne Anderson to approve the minutes of the
March 14, 2001 meeting as amended, seconded by Leslie Millar, and carried by
unanimous vote.
Members were requested to suggest possible guest speakers.
Wayne Anderson reported some school principals were upset over the Sheriff's
Department taking over the School Police, and it was his understanding this had not
yet happened. This item was discussed. The concern was that the current school
police would be pulled out to work other areas since the Sheriff's Department was
already short of deputies.
Committee Reports
Committee reports included Boundaries /School Safety discussion of problems with
developers, a curriculum report and a School Board report. An increase in the number
® of career academies and adding them to the high schools was discussed.

SAC Member Reports
SAC member reports were given. Wayne Anderson reported on several items that
were discussed at Allamanda Elementary, including school uniforms and a new
reading program accessible on the internet. Scott Blake reported the developer of
Albertsons at NorthMil Plaza had agreed to provide a crossing guard for Grove Park
Elementary but the school had indicated they did not need the guard; therefore, he
planned to recommend the developer write a check in lieu of providing the crossing
guard. A report was made by Murt Kakli for H L. Watkins Middle School. Judy
Hanrahan's report for Watson B. Duncan Middle School included the possibility that
the low quartile math FCAT students may have to attend summer school, handling of
the anniversary of Columbine, incentives to award the good kids through the Bug
program for which R. J. Gator's was suggested as a possible participant,
announcement that school would begin August 14, 2001 and teachers would begin
work August 7, and that the school improvement program had been provided for
review. Jan Porter reported for School of the Arts Middle School, during which
changes in the requirements for certification for teachers was discussed. Jim Panoch
reported for Suncoast High that lights had been provided in the,baseball field, two new
portables had been received, and impressive reports had been made on awards and
scholarships by the students. Jan Porter provided a report for Alexander W. Dreyfoos,
Jr. School of the Arts which included announcement of a musical show which was to
be presented. Scott Blake announced improvisation show times. Money for the gifted
programs going to the District resulting in the loss of one teacher for the Dreyfoos
School of the Arts was discussed.
There was no old business.
New Business
The following nominations for 2001 -2002 Officers were made: Wayne Anderson,
Chair; and Judy Hanrahan, Vice Chair.
The next meeting was announced for May 9, 2001.
