HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes AIPP 1215041 • ART IN PUBLIC PLACES ADVISORY BOARD December 15, 2004 Minutes The Art in Public Places Advisory Board met on December 15, 2004. The meeting was called to order at 5:34 PM, and opened with the pledge of allegiance. I. ROLL CALL Members present: Lee Bickford, Diane Cappella, Myra Davis, Ellen Dukes, William Leizman, Linda Oliver, Audrey Stoller, Garri Katz, and Marilyn Spungin. Also Present: Kara Irwin, Staff Liaison and Senior Planner, Nina Nikolova, Alternate Staff Liaison and Planner, Susan Bell, Public Information/Recording Coordinator. Diane Cappella, Chair Person, turned the meeting over to Linda Oliver, Vice Chairperson because she will be leaving the meeting early. Diane left the meeting at 6:40 PM II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The board approved the minutes from the November 17, 2004 meeting. III. OLD BUSINESS All board members came to the City Clerk's office and reviewed the presentations of the artists for the PGA Flyover. The board has agreed to meet on January 19, 2005 to discuss all the finalists for the flyover. IV. NEW BUSINESS A) Hood Road Office Park — Recommendation to City Council Scott Colton of the Gaeta Development Co. presented the proposed art work for the Hood Road Office Park to the board. The building site is located on Hood Road next to I -95. Scott presented a photo of the sculpture which is called "Coming to Bear" by Llewellyn Davies. The dimensions of the sculpture are 42 "L X 31"H X 28" D. The base will be approximately 3 feet high with lighting at the bottom. The sculpture will be made of bronze. The board was very concerned over the size of the sculpture, as they felt it is much too small. There was discussion about what can be done to make the piece stand out more. They discussed raising the pedestal in order to show off the • sculpture and also deter children from climbing on the sculpture. They board would like to see an illustration of the pedestal before approving the piece. i 0 B) Beniamin Hip-h School —Recommendation to City Council Anne Booth of Urban Design Studio presented the art piece being proposed for the Benjamin High School. Anne gave the details of the sculpture which is titled "Journeys ". The artist is John Raimondi. The piece will cost approximately $258,108. The Dimensions are 8' 6" X 14' 6" X 10' 5 ". The piece will be located on the Grandiflora entrance of the school. The lighting will be deflected from several directions around the sculpture. The slab will be flush to the ground and will be 16' X 8'X 8'. The piece was selected because it represents children growing into adults and hands reaching out to adults. Mr. Thomas, a teacher at the Benjamin School, along with Ashley Albert, a student, at the Benjamin School spoke on behalf of the school and talked about why they chose the sculpture and what it meant to the school. There was discussion about the material and location of the sculpture. The board wanted to make sure there is access for the public to see the art. The Benjamin School Principal stated that there was public access and if the public comes to the parking lot they will be able to walk up to the sculpture. The board was also concerned with the edges of the sculpture possibly being rough and sharp. Anne Booth stated that the school will make sure that there are no sharp edges that would be a danger to children. There was also discussion about making sure the • piece is properly secured to the base. Anne Booth stated that the piece will be securely anchored to the slab. The board voted 7 -0 to approve the sculpture and recommend it to City Council. Q Legacy Place — Workshop Artist, Mark Fuller presented artwork he is proposing for the retail area of Legacy Place. Mark explained that all the art will be a tribute to Hank Skakowski who was a driving force in the City of Palm Beach Gardens and was recently killed in a motorcycle accident. Mark described to the board four functional art benches that will be installed in different locations in Legacy Place. Each bench will incorporate a pair of cast metal shoes that will signify the different passions that Hank Skakowski had. Each bench will also have a plaque. There was discussion about having foot prints leading to the benches. There was also discussion about the location of the benches and possibly placing the benches along the walking trail that is planned for Legacy Place. Mark Fuller also presented a sculpture that is titled "Stack 45 ". This piece represents Hank Skakowski's passion for music. The approximate dimensions will be 18'L X 26'W X 21'W. The piece will be made of aluminum and steel and will possibly incorporate different colors to the part of the sculpture that look like iold record discs. • The board liked all the artwork that Mark Fuller presented and encouraged him to keep going and come back when he has more information to present. • V. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:02 PM.
