CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS
EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD
MARCH 8, 2000
The March 8, 2000, Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education
Advisory Board was called to order at 7:35 P.M. in the Council Chambers of the new
Municipal Complex located at 10500 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens,
Florida.
The roll was called and the following members were found to be in attendance: Chair
Wayne Anderson, Anne Berg, Ilene Gerber, Judith Hanrahan, Vice Chair Leslie Millar,
Charlotte Schiff, James Panoch, and Charlotte Schiff. John Gardner arrived at 7:55
p.m.. City Council Liaison Eric Jablin and Palm Beach Gardens High School student
Ashley Reiss were also present.
Anne Berg made a motion to approve the minutes of the February 10, 2000 meeting as
submitted. Motion was seconded by Leslie Millar and carried by unanimous vote.
® Beth Clark, a resident and parent of a student at Eisenhower Elementary School,
explained that she was present because she had submitted an application to serve on
this Board and also to speak to the Board regarding what might happen to Eisenhower
Elementary next year as a result of losing approximately 300 students to the new
Riviera Beach school. Ms. Clark reported that there would be an emergency PTA
meeting the following night to discuss the reported possibility expressed by a member
of the School Board that Eisenhower Elementary might be closed. Ms. Clark explained
that the gifted programs for three,schools might be combined into one, which could be
located at Eisenhower Elementary. Another possibility which had been mentioned was
to use the school as a motel school where other students would be brought in and the
Eisenhower Elementary students would be bussed out, which parents did not want to
happen. Ms. Clark explained that with the projected growth of the City, the school
population would change in the next couple of years. Chair Anderson commented that
he would try to attend the PTA meeting.

Boundaries - No report.
Curriculum - Charlotte Schiff reported FCAT had been discussed.
School Board Forum - Jim Panoch reported that there was nothing significant to report
other than items which had appeared in the newspaper.
Chair Anderson commented that Mr. Panoch had obtained Tom Lynch as guest speaker
for the May meeting, and that Mr. Lynch had spoken at the Kiwanis Club.
Motion was made by Anne Berg to authorize Scott Blake to send out a letter to
Governor Bush regarding the A+ . school bonus program before the next meeting.
Motion was seconded by Leslie Millar and unanimously carried.
Partnership - Leslie Millar indicated there was nothing to report.
SAC Member Signup
Allamanda Elementary - Chair Anderson reported the school was in the process of
developing their school improvement plan.
Palm Beach Gardens Elementary - Anne Berg reported class sizes had been discussed,
more portables had been requested, and that two SAC meetings would be held this
month.
Chair Anderson reported that Anne Berg had been recognized for her work at Timber
Trace at a volunteer breakfast. Two other board members, Judith Hanrahan and Wayne
Anderson, had also been recognized.
Timber Trace Elementary - No report.
A Grove Park Elementary - Vice Chair Leslie Millar provided a report. _

H. L. Watkins Middle - There was no report.
Watson B. Duncan Middle - Judith Hanrahan reported special education teachers were
being cut because federal funds were being cut, and unless the funding was re-
established the teachers would be lost.
Charlotte Schiff commented that two retirees here had been former parent and student
advocate volunteers in the north and she would give Vice Chair Millar their phone
numbers so that she could provide that information to interested parties.
School of the Arts Middle - No report.
Palm Beach Gardens High -. Student Ashley Reiss reported the students did not care
about the FCAT tests because they knew the tests did not count.
William T. Dwyer High - No report.
Suncoast High - Jim Panoch reported the school had been very happy with their testing
program, happy that some of their students had won automobile design awards from
Chrysler, and happy that they were going to have a musical play.
Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts - No report.
North Tech - There was no report.
Old Business
"A +" school bonus letter: It was reported that Scott Blake was finalizing the letter
and the Board voted to give the letter to the City Council for their approval before
sending it. It was decided that the letter should be sent as soon as possible.
Forum of Legislature Candidates - City Council Liaison Eric Jablin reported he would

continue to work on this matter during the next couple of months.
New Business
The next meeting date of April 12, 2000 was announced.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
