HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes EAB 091300CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD SEPTEMBER 13, 2000 The September 13, 2000, Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board was called to order at 7:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Complex located at 10500 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The roll was called and the following members were found to be in attendance: Chair Scott Blake, Wayne Anderson, Anne Berg, John Gardner, Ilene Gerber, Judith Hanrahan, Nancy Krause- Laurie, Vice Chair Leslie Millar, James Panoch, Jan Porter, and Ron Sadaka. City Council Liaison- Vice Mayor Eric Jablin was also present. Minutes of the August 9, 2000 meeting were approved as submitted. Committee Reports Public Liaison - There was no report. ® Boundaries - There was no report. Curriculum - City Council Liaison Jablin provided an update on plans for the Political Forum of Legislative Candidates, including the candidates who were running for office. Discussion ensued. Upon motion, second, and unanimous vote it was decided to cancel the Forum for the legislative candidates since some were unwilling to participate. Consensus of the Board was to invite School Board candidates to the October meeting. School Board Forum - James Panoch reported on several items which had been discussed, of which he felt the most important was appointment of a Chief Academic Officer to balance the Chief Operating Officer . Partnership - There was no report. Page 1 of 4 SAC Meeting Reports ® Allamanda Elementary - Wayne Anderson reported he had been unable to attend but would receive a copy of the minutes. Palm Beach Gardens Elementary - Anne Berg reported the meeting had been well attended, and items discussed had included the school improvement plan. Ms. Berg reported she had been impressed with the level of-involvement of the parents and teachers. Timber Trace Elementary - Ron Sadaka reported that items discussed had included literacy day, a school newsletter which would be published by a business partner, support for the old grading system, implementation of Parent Student Learning Nights, boundary changes which affected enrollment, the situation at Eisenhower Elementary, an upcoming fundraiser, uniforms, and that the next meeting was scheduled for September 25. Grove Park Elementary - There was no report. H. L. Watkins Middle - There was no report. ® Watson B. Duncan Middle - There was no report. School of the Arts Middle - Jan Porter's report included items which had been discussed, and announcements that the school renovation was almost complete, and that the school had received the highest FCAT scores in Palm Beach County. Palm Beach Gardens High - John Gardner reported two items had been discussed, a possible field trip and the incident which had recently taken place in the cafeteria where a student had taken a loaded gun to school. Leslie Millar described the incident, reported City Council Liaison Jablin had immediately - _set up a meeting which was attended by school police, Palm Beach Gardens police .officers, Riviera Beach police officers, school principals, and - others, reported safety measures being taken. Discussion ensued. Some suggestions were to remove one group of students to another school, to report to the school names of kids who were in fights outside the school, and to immediately provide addresses of students who had been expelled to the police. Page 2 of 4 William T. Dwyer High - Nancy Krause Laurie provided a report. ® Suncoast High - There was no report. Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts - There was no report. North Tech - There was no report. Old Bpsiness Chair Blake reported he had written a letter to the School Board regarding the alternative program at Eisenhower Elementary School as decided at the last meeting and then learned the City had already sent a letter on the same issue. City Council Liaison Jablin described the events regarding this miscommunication, and assured the Board this would not happen again. Other prior miscommunication with the City was discussed. Inviting candidates for election to the October meeting and allowing them to speak was discussed. SAC members for the high schools were asked to call the schools requesting that student volunteers for this Board be place on their agendas. Appreciation for the way this Board had worked together was expressed by former Chair Wayne Anderson. Mr. Jablin_announced the City's Board appreciation event would be held September 28 and in the members of the Board to attend. City Council Liaison Jablin showed a map of the Golf Digest ( Mirasol) development and pointed out the areas designated for schools. Mt _ Jablin explained that since the School Board did not plan to build there for a few years, Mirasol was proposing to switch this land with a piece now owned by WCI approximately a mile away to be the designated school site. Input from the Board had been requested. A member of the Board commented that the WCI development was _planned to be very upscale, therefore, the school property if located there would be worth more than at the Mirasol site.
