BEAUTIFICATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE
SEPTEMBER 13, 2000
The September 13, 2000, Special meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens
Beautification and, Environmental Committee was called to order at 5:32 P.M. in the
Growth Management Department's Chamber of the Municipal Complex located at
10500 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Members of the Committee were on the telephone for a conference call. City Forester
Hendrickson suggested individual comments.
Jack Hughes suggested adding annuals for color and commented it was an excellent
plan and he had no problems with any of it. City Forester Mark Hendrickson
responded annuals were shown on the plan list on a selected basis.
Sally Wilks suggested using perinnels in place of some annuals and pointed out
carrotwood was on the plans, which was an exotic. City Forester Hendrickson
responded carrotwoods would be eliminated.
Donna Wisneski commented on use of sago palms and that native palms might not
adapt easily and would require followup maintenance. Mr. Hendrickson responded
there were other varieties that could replace the sago palms and that some roadways
were next to preserve areas where there were native pines.
Jeff Renault commented the plan was very well done.
Councilman David Clark commented this was an improvement on the earlier plan and
that he had also noted the carrotwood on the plan.
Joe Royals commented the uplighting on the banyan on MacArthur Boulevard never
seemed to be turned on, which Mr. Hendrickson noted would be checked.
Principal Planner Jim Norquest commented that Councilman Sabatello had requested
a volunteer professional landscape architect be found to sit on the committee, and he
would be working on that. Mr. Norquest explained that the landscape architect who
had worked on the plans had been a temporary employee who was no longer with the
City, and that the plans would be reviewed with the City Manger and with Craig
Kunkle, a landscape architect who sat as a member of the Planning and Zoning
Commission, and then would be submitted to the Planning and Zoning Commission
before formal submittal to the City Council. Any of the Committee who wanted to
attend any of the upcoming meetings were advised to contact Mr. Hendrickson.
The call was terminated. Mr. Hendrickson announced that the participants had been
Jeff, Donna, Sally, Joe, and Jack.
Oak trees being removed in the medians at Golf Digest were discussed.
Mr. Hendrickson reported he had spoken with Carol Gold regarding keeping the
Committee, and had been told to continue.
