EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD
SEPTEMBER 8, 1999
The September 8, 1999, Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education
Advisory Board was called to order at 7:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers of the
Municipal Complex located at 10500 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens,
Florida.
The roll was called and the following members were found to be in attendance: Chair
Wayne Anderson, Anne Berg, Ilene Gerber, Leslie Millar, Murtaza Kakli, Jan Porter,
Ron Sadaka, Charlotte Schiff, James Panoch, and Nancy Krause- Laurie.. Student
representative Andrea Kanner and City Council Liaison Eric Jablin were also present.
Ron Sadaka made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 9, 1999 meeting as
submitted. Motion was seconded by Ilene Gerber and carried by unanimous vote.
Vice Chair Leslie Millar, Chair of the Partnership Committee, reported that three
schools were working in partnership with the American Legion.
SAC Committee Reports
Chair Anderson reported that Allamanda's new principal, Dr. Cynthia Pino, was well -
liked by both the teachers and parents.
Members were requested to state their preference for a school SAC on a sign -up sheet.
Old Business
Vice Chair Leslie Millar and Ron Sadaka thanked Eric Jablin for his hard work in
promoting Little Acorns. Vice Chair Millar read aloud a letter from Little Acorns
management expressing regret that the fund raising program had not yielded enough
money and therefore the Little Acorns program could not be instituted at this time,
advising that money collected had been returned, and thanking the Board for their
efforts. Discussion ensued. Board members expressed disappointment, and it was
suggested for future programs of this type that a special account be set up in which to
. deposit donations. Consensus was to send a letter thanking the businesses who had
pledged funds, keeping those contacts open for future projects.

Partnership - Leslie Millar, George Mastics
The SAC signup sheet was reviewed, and many members had signed up for a SAC.
• Leslie Millar reported that high schools were being contacted for new student
members, and students would be attending next month's meeting.
Chair Wayne Anderson reported the area schools had good SAT scores.
Motion was made by Jan Porter to write a letter to the City requesting the sidewalk at
the Palm Beach Gardens Elementary School be extended for safety reasons so that
children would not have to walk in the street. Motion was seconded by Charlotte
Schiff, and carried by unanimous vote.
Anne Berg volunteered to contact the Reading Coordinators at each elementary school
regarding providing reading tutors.
Chair Wayne Anderson reported he had asked the new principal of Allamanda to be
a guest speaker. Charlotte Schiff protested against "A" schools receiving state funds
needed by other schools. Ron Sadaka recommended creating programs to address
areas where improvements were needed. Eric Jablin recommended inviting candidates
for State legislature to hear the Board's feelings on this issue. Chair Anderson
volunteered to find out how the School Board was handling the equity issue. Charlotte
• Schiff suggested creation of a subcommittee and holding a town forum on this issue.

Mr. Jablin recommended that future legislators be informed of the Board's position on
vouchers through a public forum. Charlotte Schiff suggested that other counties be
brought into this effort. Guest Helen Zenitick was introduced by Mr. Jablin, who
explained that Ms. Zenitick was running for Sharon Merchant's seat. Ms. Zenitick
agreed with a public forum for candidates on education, expressed her opinion that
vouchers were not a panacea for the schools, and commented that all funds possible
were needed to stay with public rather than private schools. Chair Anderson reported
there were many different issues candidates needed to address, including whether the
lottery was appropriate to fund schools. Ms. Zenitick commented more programs were
needed for kids to feel good about themselves, such as the new program at North Tech.
Ms. Zenitick agreed to attend the proposed public forum. The worsening problem of
disruptive students was discussed.
• Suggestions for principals as future guest speakers were discussed.
Grove Park Elementary and Eisenhower schools were discussed as possible additional
schools to be watched over by the Board.
Member Comments
Jan Porter reported the problems of a middle school policy requiring tests after 5 days
of excused absence. Chair Anderson suggested a School Board member be contacted
to address this policy. It was suggested that more guest speakers were needed to
inform the Board regarding things going on in the schools, and School Board members
Lynch and Johnson were suggested as possible guest speakers.
Jan Porter, Charlotte Schiff, and Ilene Gerber were appointed to work on a public
forum for legislative candidates.
Adjournment
Charlotte Schiff made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 9:10 p.m. Ron Sadaka
• seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous vote.
