II DIRECTOR'S REPORT: *Vice Mayor Lauren Furtado recommended a study done by coordinators, supervisors and staff to evaluate present teen center programs and facilities: what is going on and how many participants are involved in programs there. It is apparent the 5 year old teen program has outgrown the small building and facilities they have been using. *Plant Drive Park has outdoor basketball, volleyball, softball and City's roller hockey rink, and planned skateboard facility. *Brought to our attention PAL and TIP office is needed and could be incorporated in overall center plans for teen programs. *Input from area parents and teens needed advising what works and what does not. Weekend "Escape" Trips such as fishing, horseback riding, canoe and kayaking and School's Out Trips, are popular but can be costly for some and limit participation. *Teen Coordinator and Supervisor are working with PTO getting support for our • programs; structured activities, homework, tutoring offered have impressed parents WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD T It • * FRDAP — Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program awarded $100,000 grant for development of Gardens Park. The Parks and Recreation department has submitted two new FRDAP grants including a $200,000 matching grant for the Skate Park at Plant Drive Park and $50,000 for Westminster Park. II CONCERNS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: *Middle Schoolers age 11 to 14 should have a central meeting place that is safe with organized activities and age appropriate agendas; Plant Drive location a good one *Skate Park at Plant Drive location will draw in more participants at Teen Center including residents from surrounding towns *PAL and TIPS on the grounds of Teen Center would be an added attraction and afford a positive environment *Keep in mind, large numbers attending may not be beneficial to the teen program; keep quality of programs and activities as first priority *Letter of recommendation that facility be expanded to approximately 5,000 sq. ft. will be sent to City Council from this advisory board; funding and support could be sought from developers *Temporary toilets are unappealing though serviceable; restrooms and concession should be taken care of soon and ready by spring *North county could use a shooting range perhaps out by Pratt Whitney *Roller hockey rink is warped and weathered; wood is a maintenance "nightmare "; fiberboard replacement would be ideal (but very costly) III ADJOURNMENT: *The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 P.M.
