The roll was called and the following were found to be in attendance: Alan Adams, Monica Adams, Chair Wayne Anderson, Anne Berg, Scott Blake, Ilene Gerber, Mary Inglis, Vice Chair Leslie Millar, Murtaza Kakil, and Ron Sedaka. Two students, Adam Allgood and Jordan Everett , and City Council Liaison Eric Jablin were also present. Absent from the meeting were Nona Helsel, Deborah Martel, Jan Porter, Lisa Ridgley, Karen Robinson, Alan Sara, and Tesula Stewart. The minutes of the August 12, 1998 meeting were reviewed. Alan Adams pointed out that since there was more than one ad hoc committee, the minutes should be changed to identify the committee as Ad Hoc Committee for Business School Partnership, and that the words "Business School" should be inserted in front of the word "Partnership" on the last page. Alan Adams made a motion to accept the minutes of the August 12, 1998 meeting as amended. Motion was seconded by Alan Adams and unanimously carried. Chair of the Public Liaison Committee Mary Inglis reported that the committee had met and completed their end of the year report, that she had called everyone on Monday night to remind them of this meeting, and that she had brought a new member to the meeting. Chair of the Boundary Committee Ron Sedaka reported that the committee had met and prepared their annual report which would be typed and turned in by Friday. is • City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board September 9, 1998 Page 2 Chair Alan Adams reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and prepared their annual report, and had decided to continue the following activities for the coming year: to continue the literacy K thru 3 program, to monitor vocational schools, and to look more closely at the pupil progression plan to see what it is and how it is being implemented in the schools. Vice Chair Leslie Millar reported she had worked on a partnership program for her school and had Lens Crafters in that program, who had a project called "Home Town Days" in which they provided free eye exams and glasses to any student who needed them. Lens Crafters agreed to partner with Allamanda but since they only had a limited number of eyeglass frames to fit small children, requested a middle school also. Howell Watkins was suggested. Ms. Millar stated she would contact the principal of Howell Watkins regarding this matter. During discussion of the difficulty reported by Ms. Millar in making contact with the Allamanda school principal, Mr. Adams stressed the importance of having a SAC member at every school who could make those kinds of contacts. Eric Jablin reported he and Ms. Millar would work on the brochures that weekend. Councilman Jablin reported he had had a conversation with the Director of Operations at LRP Publishing Company that day who agreed to meet to discuss a role for them in this program. Councilman Jablin commented that LRP Publishing had relocated here from Pennsylvania and were having trouble getting qualified people to fill their positions. Mr. Adams questioned whether schools had been contacted to see if they had other partnerships. Chair Anderson suggested the schools be contacted so that conflicts in partnerships could be avoided. City Council Liaison Eric Jablin reported about 150 people had attended the School Board Candidates Forum at Palm Beach Gardens High School on August 22. Mr. • Jablin reported the students did a wonderful job of producing a quality tape for City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board September 9, 1998 Page 3 television, which was aired twice on successive Mondays. An ad was placed in the Palm Beach Post for the second airing. Mr. Jablin reported Jim Brosner did a great job of moderating and thanked Alan, Monique, and Deborah for working hard on this project. Mr. Jablin commented that the questions were very good. It was reported that the forum on Channel 42 had included all candidates and was only 45 minutes long, so that each candidate only basically had time to make one statement. Another member reported that efforts had been made to get most of the residents of Palm Beach Gardens to see the tape, and commented that it would be interesting to see if more residents had voted this time. Suggestions for next year's forum were to make signs visible on the tape, and to give each candidate a chance to answer every question, as well as questions from the floor, and possibly to lengthen the time to allow that. Alan Adams commented he had had two tapes made from the master which he would loan out. A member commented that only six of the members of this Board had been present, and expressed her opinion that all members of the Board should have attended to show the public they considered this an important matter. It was reported that Riviera Beach had had a large turnout. Mr. Jablin commented that this had been the first time and was a learning experience, and that he hoped to have more participation the next time. Others commented on how good the forum had been. Allamanda SAC had not met. Palm Beach Gardens Elementary SAC had met, introduced new members and discussed when to hold meetings. Timbertrace Elementary SAC had met, introduced new members, invited participation, and scheduled meetings. Chair Anderson commented he felt one of the most important things this Board could do was to have a SAC member for each school to establish a communication link with the schools. Chair Anderson passed around a sign -up sheet for those schools who • needed SAC representatives. Chair Anderson requested that if someone could not • City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board September 9, 1998 Page 4 attend any of the SAC meetings that they sign up to report back to the Board on the School Board meetings aired on Channel 20. Chair Anderson reported that several dependable members were being lost and needed to be replaced with other quality members. Chair Anderson stated a need to establish an ad hoc membership committee. Mr. Adams explained the procedure that the prior year's committee had followed. Several members volunteered to serve on the committee. City Council Liaison Jablin indicated he would obtain the dates that Board members' terms expired, but believed it would be after January. Alan Adams reported that according to his records there were three Board members who had missed several meetings and should no longer be members. Mr. Jablin reported the City was going to • set terms for Board members for 2 years mining from November to November, with two consecutive terms available. Chair Anderson listed the members of the Ad Hoc Membership Committee: Eric Jablin, Chair, Alan Adams, Wayne Anderson, Leslie Millar, Jordan Everett, and Monique Adams. Chair Anderson reported that Nona Helsel had been nominated as Historian at the last meeting; however, he had been unable to reach her, and it had been suggested she would make a good Chair for the Curriculum Committee. One of the students had volunteered to serve as Historian if Ms. Helsel did not want to serve. Ron Sedaka made a motion to withdraw the nomination for Nona Helsel as Historian. Lisa Ridgely nominated Adam Allgood to serve as Historian. Ron Sedaka seconded the motion, which carried unanimously. • It was reported by Chair Ron Sedaka that the Boundary Committee would like to • City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board September 9, 1998 Page 5 continue to provide an annual forum for the ABC Committee to interact with Palm Beach Gardens residents, to continue to monitor concurrency issues, to continue to monitor proposed legislation that impacts concurrency and boundaries, and to continue to examine boundary lines and inform the residents of proposed changes and provide a forum in which opinions can be voiced. After an announcement that safety was now included in this committee's scope, Chair Sedaka indicated he would go back to the committee for safety goals. Chair of the Public Liaison Committee Mary Inglis proposed a hot line or some way the residents could provide input and ask questions, and explained that the Committee's main goal was to assist the public in learning what kind of resources were available to meet their problems. Mr. Adams questioned whether the existing City hot line could be utilized for this. City Council Liaison Jablin volunteered to check with the employee who handled the hot line. Alan Adams stated the Curriculum Committee planned to continue with K through 3 literacy programs, to continue with the Board students providing tutoring to the three elementary schools, to possibly act as a catalyst between the school organizations of the High School to provide students to go into the elementary schools as tutors, and to expand to adult tutors who could go into the schools during the normal school day. Mr. Adams described a Riviera Beach summer school program which accommodated 600 students. Attendance at the Riviera Beach Education Advisory Board's meeting was discussed. Guest speakers were discussed. It was the consensus of the Board that invitations to each meeting be sent each month to the principals and assistant principals of all the schools. It was decided to ask Amelia Ostrosky, Principal of Middle School of the Arts, to be guest speaker for next mouth. • City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board September 9, 1998 Page 6 There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. 0 Wan Adams i r • It 626.8256 A CALL m 9/30/98 1 EEAMNGS 06:19PM 0212 GATEZWG STORM: Haw pain 84isee Commy Scheele roll poor sad Minority cumns Wj YOUR CHILD been deaNd piaeemeat in ipeclnl prosraa he /eke would bettetlt hum?
