EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD
JANUARY 14, 1998
The January 14, 1998, Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education
Advisory Board was called to order at 7:40 P.M. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal
Complex located at 10500 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Ms. Gray, Principal of Dwyer High School was a guest speaker, stating that her vision for
Dwyer High School was excellence in every area of student achievement should always come
-- - - first. Ms. Gray-discussed her plans for the future of Dwyer High School and the ciriculum
offered at the school. Ms. Gray explained the recent decision for boundary changes for the
school and how the process worked and how the development of the Abacoa project would affect
Dwyer High School. A dicussion ensued regarding school spirit and how to get parents and
students involved in their schools, as well as the programs offered at the various levels of
education.
The roll was called and the following appointed members were found to be in attendance:
Ron Sadaka, Alan Sara, Alan Adams, Mary Inglis, Scott Blake, Deborah Martel, Lesley Millar,
Karen Robinson, Bernard Levine, and Nona Helsel.
• The minutes of the December, 1997, meeting were approved as written.
Dicussion took place regarding board organization, with Chairman Adams handing out a
list of which members were assigned to the various standing committees. Tesula Stuart was
assigned to the Boundaries and Facilities committees. A letter was received from Brenda Martin
and Carolyn Amazon, resigning the positions as regular members of the Education Advisory
Board.
Chairman Adams explained the function of SACs and stated that it was a worthwhile
effort to have Board members on the various SACs of the schools serving Palm Beach Gardens.
Chairman Adams stated he would give a more detailed account of a Board member's function on
a SAC at the next meeting, at which time assignments would be given for membership to the
SACs.
Reports were heard from the following standing committees: Curiculum Committee,
Public Liaison Committee, Boundaries and Facilities Committee. Scott Blake also gave a report
on the activities of the Students First Organization. Lesley Millar of the Curiculum Committee
said she would attempt to get Raul iribarren, the Federal Programs Director at the school district
office, to address the board on the subject of Title 1 Programs at the next meeting. The board
approved her suggestion.
• Councilman Jablin stated that he would ask the City's Community Affairs Specialist to
. attend the next meeting to meet the members of the Board so that she can write a more
comprehensive article for the newspapers. It was also decided that the Public Liaison Committee
would call the members of the Board to remind them of meeting dates and times.
Members of Palm Beach Gardens Elementary and Palm Beach Gardens High School
SACs gave a report as to the activities of those committees.
A discussion ensued regarding the upcoming amendment to the Education Advisory
Board ordinance that would provide for amendments to the terms of members and the creation of
a Student Coalition.
Staff Liaison Paul Friedman informed the Board that the City was moving closer to the
— - creation of -a- Web -Site and asked that the - members think about what -they would want to include
on the Web Site regarding the Education Advisory Board. Mr. Friedman suggested that the
Board write a synopsis of its accomplishments since its creation to include on the Web Site.
There were no additional requests for additions to the next agenda.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 9:20 P.M.
