Beautification and Environmental Committee
Summary Notes
Wednesday, December 3, 1997
Joe Royals called the meeting to order at' -45 P.M. The following members were in
attendance: Bettie Marks, Joe Royals, Sheryl Snyder, Susan Wood, and Connie
Premuroso. City Council Liaison David Clark and City Staff Liaison Mark
Hendrickson were also present.
The November 5, 1997 B & E Committee meeting minutes were approved.
Mark Hendrickson passed around pictures of the Arbor Day tree planting ceremony
for the Committee to see, and described the event to the members that were not
present. The City is still waiting for the City sign permits to be approved by FDOT.
He introduced Connie Premuroso as the newest member of the Committee. Mark
Fuller was contacted to make the B &E beautification award's sign.
A discussion of the awards nominations began. The three residential nominees
were the Frenchman's Creek, Ballenlsles, and PGA National. Bettie Marks noted
that PGA National has already received the award in the past. The two
nonresidential nominees were the Regional Center (The Mall) and Harbor Financial
Center. Bettie makes the comment that the award should be 95% visual with
landscaping the main emphasis, not a pretty building.
Councilman David Clark arrives. He has no new direction from City Council,
everyone is happy with what the Committee is doing.
It was clarified that the Committee would only be voting on one award winner. Mr.
Hendrickson will get the schedule for the City's news letter, so the Committee can
coordinate the award selections with the timing of the news letter. Susan Wood
suggests that the first award should be at a location that is very visible to the public
to get a lot of interest generated for the award. Susan also reminded the Committee
that at the last meeting there was a discussion about having an environmental
award as well as a beautification award for those projects in the City that do an
outstanding job environmentally.
The Committee took a vote for each project individually, and the MacArthur Regional
Center is the winner.
Sheryl Snyder makes a motion that for the next award the Committee select a
residential project. The motion was seconded and approved.
Joe Royals makes a motion to make a list of nominees for the next award, so that
the members can be inspecting the sites. The motion was seconded and approved.
The first nominee was Ballenlsles. Joe asked Mark if he had any suggestions.
Marks suggests Town Oaks because Joe had brought it up at a previous meeting.
Susan Woods mentions Frenchmans Creek should stay on the nominee list. Mark
suggests the Sanctuary, where David Clark lives, could be a candidate. Mark
suggest maybe having a field trip with the Committee members, because some of
the suggested communities are gated. David Clark mentions Nature's Hideaway.
Mark mentions Bent Tree, and Monet Oaks were Jeff Renault lives.
The Committee's list of single family project becomes Town Oaks, Frenchmans
Creek, Ballenlsles, Bent Tree, the Sanctuary and Natures Hideaway. Mark suggests
that the Committee could also consider multi - family projects like Prosperity Oaks,
Mira Floras and Garden East Appartments.
The Committee was in favor of maybe having a weekend field trip to review the six
projects, but put off the arrangements until the next meeting.
