Heather Rockwell, visitor was in attendance The April 2, 1997 B & E Committee meeting minutes were approved. Under old business, Mark Hendrickson explained for the new members the requirements for Tree City USA, and the Committee was entertaining the idea of having a Arbor Day ceremony to satisfy one the requirements. He discussed the need for the Committee to determine any 1997 -1998 budget needs. Possible costs needed for Arbor Day or the proposed beautification awards were examples he gave the Committee to think about. Susan Wood inquired about the beautification award idea. Bettie Marks explained the past history of the award. Briefly, a framed certificate was presented to a residential project or commercial project for the best landscaping. A small sign was also displayed in front of the project for recognition, and this was done every month. The idea is still a good one, but the City has gotten so large, the Committee will need start over with their own way of coordinating such an award. Suggestions about having sub - committees formed to make the inspections. Another idea was for the City to have a large plaque displayed that would contained the names of the winners of such award. Bettie Marks will call Jeff Renault to bring to the next meeting the old sign. The Committee suggested started off with commercial projects first. Donna Amado volunteered to write some ideas for criteria /minimum standards to base the awards on. Discussion about planting the Arbor Day tree at the Palm Beach Gardens High School began. Susan Wood volunteered to video tape the area, so the Committee could pick the best location. The Committee asked Mark Hendrickson to look into what the City might accept as to some demarcation of the tree planting by the Committee. The Committee said that the date should be set in the fall after the school kids are back, the suggestion to start coordination with the school in August. It was agreed that the Committee would try and meet every month through the summer, but everyone would call Mark if they could not attend and if there was not going to be a quorum the meeting would be canceled. Mark Hendrickson talked about the City Council meeting in which City Council approved the FDOT style "Welcome" sign and their locations. Some discussion about where we are at with the design of the large welcome sign. Mark explained some of the comments the sign designer was given by the Committee, Bobbie Herakovich, and the City Council, and hopefully next month the large sign can be reviewed. Motion was made to adjourn.
