Wednesday, April 2, 1997 Minutes
Vice - Chairman Jeffrey Renault called the meeting to order at 5:40 P.M. The following
members were in attendance: Donna Amado, Betty Marks, Jeffrey Renault, Sheryl
Snyder, Sally Wilks and Susan Wood. Staff Liaison Mark Hendrickson was also
present.
March 5, 1997 B & E Committee meeting minutes were approved.
Under old business, Mark Hendrickson explained that the City Council is working with
petitioner for the City Center project at the southwest corner of Highway U.S. 1 and
PGA Boulevard to incorporate a Palm Beach Gardens welcome sign, based on the
Committee's recommendation.
Mark Hendrickson told the Committee that, at this ti m , the City "welcome" sign location
topic will be on the April 17, 1997 agenda. Jeff moved the discussion on to the
review of the FDOT type welcome sign. Mark Hendrickson presented a display
containing scaled down colored renderings of nine (9) different welcome signs,
prepared by the City's GIS Technician, Melissa Prindiville. Mark explained the
difference between certain signs and FDOT's specifications.
A discussion about the different signs occurred among the Committee members. One
discussion centered around the logo; the Committee did not support the use of the
logo. Jeff Renault restated the Committee's position that the FDOT sign was
temporary, until replaced with the bigger major sign. Size of lettering, font, position of
lettering, wording were discussed. Jeff Renault suggested eliminating the words "to
the ", and it was well received. The Committee did not like the wording "The City of
Palm Beach Gardens Welcomes You ". Committee wants the bigger sign, and
increase spacing.
Susan Wood makes the motion to approve a revised version of number 3 rendring with
the adjustment of the elimination of the words "to the ", increasing the space between
"Welcome" and "City of", using the larger of the to revisions being the 30" by 36" size,
and without the logo. Motion was seconded and approved.
Mark Hendrickson indicated he would send the members a copy of the City sign staff
report along with their next agenda and minutes prior to the April 17, 1997 City Council
meeting.
Under new business, Jeff brings up the "Great Florida Clean -up" scheduled for April 12,
1997. Beth Ingold is coordinating this event. Susan Wood states areas where the
weeds are growing through the concrete sidewalks are tacky. Mark would give this
information to the City Manager as a maintenance issue for Public Works. Sheryl
Snyder suggests to clean up all the ramp ways along 1 -95 at PGA Boulevard, Northlake
Boulevard and Military Trail. General information about the clean up day was
discussed.
Mark Hendrickson provides the Committee information about Arbor Day. Sheryl opens
up the discussion about the possible location of a tree planting near the location of the
proposed City sign. Committee discussed what is happening at the Shell station and
Holiday Inn. Committee discussed the beautifying of Northlake Boulevard. Jeff asked
the question about funding projects. Mark suggests that the Committee come up with a
need /cost estimate and submit it to City Council during budget time. Discussion about
irrigation occurred. Mark stated that City officials ready like being a Tree City. Sheryl
asked the committee to continue the discussion about Arbor Day at the next meeting.
Mark said he would ask Bobbie Herakovich about any other priorities she may have for
the B & E Committee. Donna Amado read a list of possible future tasks and it included
beautifying the Gardens High School entrances and suggested planting a tree there.
She also suggested re- establishing the beautification awards and sign.
