HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes B&E 030597i Beautification and Environmental Committee Wednesday, March 5, 1997 Minutes Vice - Chairman Jeffrey Renault called the meeting to order. The following members were in attendance: Betty Marks, Sheryl Snyder, Sally Wilks, Susan Wood, and Jeffrey Renault. Council Liaison David Clark and Staff Liaison Mark Hendrickson were also in attendance. Mark Hendrickson states he had a call from Susan Weiss who said she would have to resign due to conflicts with her work. Jeffrey Renault received a resignation letter from Rose Drexler. Jeffrey Rcuault and Marl: I Icu(lrickson started an undated Summary of the committee's conversations, to date, on the City sign locations and types [based on two previous meetings where there was not a quorum, including one field trip]. Betty Marks asked' about the status of the sign design. Mark stated the City had not received anything yet from Urban Design Studio who was working with the City Manager on various versions of the original concept presented to the committee last year. Mark explained to the committee that the sign location is very important to the sign design. Mark explained that he included in the latest City Council staff report for the City Centre project that one "Welcome" sign location was the southwest corner of PGA Boulevard and U. S. highway One. Mark stated that the first priority "Welcome" sign location was the southeast corner of PGA Boulevard and Military Trail. Mark continued the sign location conversation with a discussion about signs at the City's limits. Past discussions but good locations at: Northern anal S011111C'I'll Cily linnits al Florida "turnpike; Northern and southern City limits at 1 -95; Northern and southern City limits at Military Trail; Northern and southern City limits at Alternate A -1 -A; Northern City limits at Central Boulevard; Eastern City limits at Northlake Boulevard. Discussion about a sign at the Turnpike and PGA Boulevard concluded in the committee re- valuating this intersection after road construction is finished. )isrnssions incIn(Ic(I proposint! ,i sil!n al Ihi northern City hinils at I'rosperily farms Road and the west side of Prosperity Farms Road at the southern City limit. The afore - mentioned sign locations would be ideal, at this time around the developed part of the City. Other sign locations are possible in the western part of the City as development occurs. Jeff summed up four committee recommendations: Request from FDOT City identification signs on the north and south limits of 1 -95 and the Turnpike. 2. Ask City Council to keep in mind the southwest corner of PGA Boulevard and U.S., Highway One to work with the developer to get a "Welcome" to City of Palm Beach Gardens sign. I 3. To install City limit signs, smaller FDOT signs to welcome travelers to Palm Beach Gardens. With the idea that those signs locations would be potential intermediate size "Welcoine" signs as the C'ily is developed, or fiends become available. 4. The southeast corner ot'PGA Boulevard and Military Trail would be the central largest "Welcome" sign. Councilman Clark states that he likes the committee's approach to the signs and location. Jeff states that any nice sign will not be cheap, so put in one sign in a good location and get some feed back. Various committee members expressed their support again for the more artistic "Gardens" sign designed by Urban Design Studio. [The tape ends and the meeting is not recorded] The following is based on City Forester Mark Hendrickson's recollection: Susan Wood makes a motion to approve the',location of the small FDOT City welcome signs and the one large ground sign at PGA Boulevard and Military Trail as presented by a plan prepared by Marl:. The Cominilleo approves motion. The committee began a discussion about what the small FDOT City welcome sign at the City limits would say. This discussion was tabled until Mark could get some examples of the way the sign could look. The committee would vote on which example they liked at the next meeting. The committee began a discussion about what their next project(s) could be. Jeff read Bobbie Herakovich's letter listing the different topics the City needs work on. Mark also suggested the committee support or take the lead in events such as Arbor Day, Earth Day, or the street Clean Day. This discussion was tabled to the next, meeting agenda. Jeff closed the meeting.
