III DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
PARKS UPDATE:
*Playscape is being torn down May 15th and will be replaced with the "Ground Zero" play
equipment by the end of the month.
*The state of the art Roller Hockey will be completed this month. YAA is registering for
youth summer leagues which are to begin June 17th. Starting this fall, YAA will be registering
youth leagues only. Parks and Recreation will be including roller hockey with our adult fall
0 sports programs and will register only adult leagues.
*Klock property has been cleared by Public Works and the bid was awarded to Russell
WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD
%4.
Trucking, for this project. Completion should be January, 1997.
*Oaks Park has the new shelter now and more picnic tables and additional landscaping are
planned for the near future.
*Plant Drive Park looks great! Huge turn outs at the games has been reported. Teen
Center will have a new sign in the fall; the teens will design and create the sign with professional
direction from Anna Gundlach.
*Church property has been acquired and agreement to purchase will be in 1997.
Demolition of church will be in 1998.
*Negotiations are going on to acquire PGA Commerce property adjoining our PGA
National Park which will add approximately 16 acres for recreational use.
RECREATION:
*Registration for summer camp and programs began April 29, 1996. Summer camp is
two - thirds full, reflecting only resident registration. May 13th is the beginning of registration for
non - residents, if there are openings. We are one of the few camps in Palm Beach County that
have Inclusion Programs for the mentally and physically challenged, and will accommodate as
long as we do not have to change our existing program for an individual's specific needs.
*Mako Sharks Swim Team is off to a great start. Having two swim coaches (Coach
Kathy Freeman and Assistant Coach Lori Miranda) who years ago had successfully coached has
brought back some of the old swimmers, along with recruiting many new swimmers. "Winning
Spirit" stoke clinic had over 40 swimmers sign up for the week long instructions.
*Concern with YAA's lack of participation on this advisory board was discussed and
. board members are dissatisfied with the present lack of communication between the YAA and city
recreational staff. Each board member voiced his/her opinions, concerns and dissatisfaction with
the present YAA officers and they recommend the City Manager and City Council be made
aware of many visible problems.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
Respectfully Submitted,
CBPJ AG&WA
Dee Schneider
