THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION. • I • PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 4404 BURNS ROAD PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 PHONE (561) 775 -8270 • FAX (561) 775 -8280 CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING DECEMBER 10, 1996 SUSAN MILLER Director The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met Tuesday, December 10, 1996 at 6:30 P.M. at the Burns Road Community Center. Members present included Chairman Jeff Sabin, Co- Chairman John Elsner, Ronnye Sands, Sandy Gottlieb, Joanne Steele, Bette Bates, Susan Miller, Director/Parks and Recreation, Brian McLaughlin, Superintendent/Parks and Recreation. Not present: Vice Mayor Lauren Furtado. I APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: *The minutes from the November 12, 1996 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory • Board were approved as written. 11 PROJECT REPORT *Klock soccer fields need growing time, landscaping and the parking lot to be complete. Grand Opening should be June, 1997 for the summer camp soccer program. *Oaks Park is complete with tennis courts, lights, and timers. Signs have been ordered and will be in place in January, 1997. We will be doing more landscaping and will be talking about adding restrooms in the near future since there has been an overwhelming demand sited by residents using these facilities. *A second softball field next to existing field to enhance our adult softball program at PGA National Park will be added. *Pavers have been added at the entrance of the Burns Road Community Center along with benches. Anticipated improvements to the back of the building at Burns Road Community Center will include leveling the area and putting in tables and chairs. III DIRECTOR'S REPORT: PARKS AND RECREATION *Bond referendum plans for phases being made for Gardens Park redevelopment. *Discussions are ongoing for replacement of existing tennis facility with Golf Digest. *YAA Baseball has dropped Little League due to boundaries which included Lake Park and only parts of PBG. Babe Ruth League boundaries include all PBG residents. IV BUSINESS REPORT: *Purchase of the church property should be finalized in May, 1997. Discussion will WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD l �{ continue on the use of this location. *Police facility will be the first of the referendum buildings to be started in 1998. City Hall will be started thereafter. Plans have not been finalized on either of these buildings but are being reviewed by council and department heads. * Palm Beach County was approved for the grant for the Frenchman's Nature Center. FAU is interested in holding nature programs at this location. *Terms and purpose of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board were discussed and will be clarified in the new ordinances. At the next meeting we will have the information needed to fill the seats on the board and alternates. V MEMBERS REPORTS: *All members expressed concern about the turn lines on Burns Road. There is no access to the community center when you are approaching from the east direction driving west on Burns Road. *John Elsner and Sandy Gottlieb who are regular participants and have tennis memberships expressed concerns about the relocation of the tennis facility. VI CITIZEN REPORT: *Howard Engle, a member of the Educational Advisory Board, attended our meeting to bring a concern to the board's attention. He is a participant in the Senior Softball League (53 and over) who once played here in PBG, but who now plays in North Palm Beach. NPB does not charge a fee. He mentioned that several other municipalities also do not charge a fee and he is requesting that PBG drop the fee for this league. Susan Miller and Brian McLaughlin both S assured Mr. Engle that it is not feasible to totally subsidize senior activities and that the department needs to cover initial costs.
