APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: *The minutes from the February 7, 1995 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board were approved as written. II DIRECTOR'S REPORT: RECREATION *Current programs all are going well. The Teen Center is open again after being closed for a short time due to vandalism. Soon you will see a different look to the outside of the Teen Center. Sheila Saunders and Trish Jensen are instructing and assisting the teens in painting "their" mural on the building, giving them another sense of belonging. There will be sport camps through our community center this summer -- Soccer Camp, Basketball Camp. Interest has been expressed for us to sponsor a Dance Camp with Ann Fraser. *The Aquatic Coordinator, Kathy Specker, was hired towards the end of 1994 and is working out very well. She has some great new ideas for us and is an real asset to our department. There is a vacant position in our department for Athletic Coordinator. It is being advertised and will be filled as quickly as possible. In the interim, Rick VanDuzer, Athletic Supervisor I is Acting Athletic Coordinator. Staff has undertaken the planning of Camp Gardens 1995. This season camp will be 10 weeks instead of the 8 weeks that was offered in the past. Applications are being accepted for all our camp positions including C.I.T.'s, counselors, group leaders, and site supervisors. Applications are being accepted for aquatic positions including Lifeguards, Water Safety • Instructors, and Swim Coaches. RECOGNIZED AS THE #1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD 4 PARKS *Fields have never been in better condition. The lighting problem on field #I is being corrected when the vendor is approved by city council. A mixture of Bermuda grass with some Bahia grass is being used on the soccer fields. Bermuda is stronger and holds up better. III OLD BUSINESS: *Oaks Park land design has been approved by city council. The county grant of $100,000 will be used to develop Oaks Park instead of Lake Catherine. Improvements to this park include a tot lot, tennis lights, pavilion, jogging trail lights and will be done in phases. *Lake Catherine lawsuit has not yet been dismissed. The county money will not be used for this project due to the restrictions it would put on the resident/non- resident issue regarding fees charged. *Roller Hockey location has not been firmed but is being liegotiated with Gardens High School and all concerned parties. Money can be raised but not until their is a commitment from the High School. Other locations were discussed for the Roller Hockey Rink. Mainly, John Bills' former property, Northcorp, which is owned by the bank. The parking lot has the right space but is in need of repair. Dan Catafumo has been interested in this YAA/City venture and may be able to do something positive for the program. The City gave a donation for the Roller Hockey Team that competed recently and tied for 4th place out of 44 teams. *NSA World Series - Fast Pitch Tournament - is set for the first week in August and the City of Palm Beach Gardens will be co- sponsors with the Town of Jupiter for this event. Our fields will be used for practice and games at Gardens Park and Lake Catherine. YAA will have total rights to concessions in Palm Beach Gardens and should recognize a good profit from this event. YAA is not playing "Fast Pitch" as many of the area associations are. PBGYAA feels that it would eliminate too many of their 12 and under players, if it was turned over to all fast pitch at this time. Slow pitch is the preference of the participants in this recreational league. However, there is one instructional scrimmage team, comprised of the older girls, that plays on weekends. IV NEW BUSINESS: *Sub - committees have not met since the formation at our December Advisory Board meeting. The Oaks residents have not informed either Ronnye Sands or Joe Kuveikis or any other board member of any subsequent meeting. The Comprehensive Plan Sub - committee, Jeff Sabin, Joanne Steele and Joe Kuveikis, had nothing to report at this meeting, but will be able to report to us at our next meeting. *PGA Park lighting concept must be initiated and approved to start the ball rolling before it can be budgeted as a capital improvement in the 1995/1996 fiscal year. *Education Advisory Board has been formed to get us closer to the School Board. Allen Adams made the presentation to the city council recommending that the least changes would be in x 0 the best interest of all. V MEMBERS REPORTS: *Members perplexed over lighting issues. *The clearing of the Klock property should be done as soon as possible. The hold up is that funds must be approved and set aside for this purpose. The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 P.M. Respectfully Submitted, 0& Mmac // A Dee Schneider NOTES: *Our neat meeting will be March 7th at Riverside Community Center at 7:30pm. *The monthly agendas will be distributed at the beginning of each meeting instead of being mailed with the minutes. •
