HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes RAB 120694.s 2 X, CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT 4404 BURNS ROAD PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING DECEMBER 6, 1994 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met Tuesday, December 6, 1994 at 7 :30 P.M. at the Riverside Community Center. Members present included John Elsner, Ronnye Sands, Joanne Steele, Joe Kuveikis, Rick DeKeyser, Y. A. A. Vice President, Brian McLaughlin, Acting Director/Parks and Recreation, and Dick Cameron, Superintendent/Parks. Not present: Chairman Jeff Sabin, Bette Bates, Sandy Gottlieb, Don Babin, Y.A.A. President, Councilman Joseph Russo. Prior to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting being called to order, several residents of The Oaks held an open discussion with Brian McLaughlin, Acting Director/Parks and Recreation, regarding plans for the development of Oaks Park. They object to a pavilion with tables and grills and to a public restroom. They favor an enhanced tot lot similar to Jupiter's Imagination Station. According to the representation at this meeting, the residents are willing to • fund what they want. It was brought to their attention that a committee is needed to formulate a survey to include a cross section of opinions from PBG residents in the surrounding developments not just The Oaks. In the absence of Chairman Jeff Sabin, John Elsner called the meeting to order and presided. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: *The minutes from the November 1, 1994 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board were approved as written. II DIRECTOR'S REPORT: RECREATION *Programs ending in a few weeks. Registration for next session begins December 12th for residents and December 19th for non - residents. *Lake Catherine lighting new design being considered to provide extra parking and additional landscaping. The proposed changes are to go before city council in January, 1995. Lake Catherine is being looked at as a possibility for the roller hockey rink due to problems with drainage at PGA National Park. *Preliminary work is being done on our pool heater. The heater will be installed in the early spring and in use fall of 1995. PARKS • *Drainage on the fields continues to be a major problem. Permits must be obtained from the South Florida Water Management to take off ground water in order to correct our problems. RECOGNIZED AS THE #1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD r-► Regulations on ground water are numerous and cause long delays preventing us from correcting the problem. We are prepared and ready for the "go ahead ". *Improvement schedule is presently in the hands of the city engineers. III OLD BUSINESS: *Nothing has been decided yet on the referendum. November, 1995 seems to be the earliest it will appear on the ballot. Another Visioning Workshop is scheduled for January 24, 1995. *National Softball Association holding tournament in Jupiter in August for 100 to 300 fast pitch teams. We have offered to assist the town of Jupiter with practice fields, rain dates and any other way that we can support the NSA tournament. V NEW BUSINESS: *Chairman Jeff Sabin wants our board to head a sub - committee for the comprehensive plan for the purpose of looking at the entire city to define areas of need and potential sites for recreation and to apply for grants in conjunction with developing the budget for 1995 -1996. *Goals for 1995 is to make the Klock property into additional field space. We have gotten the okay; the property is not contaminated. Need ideas for "1995 Wish List ". Would like to see the Christmas Parade again. *Strategic Plan will be addressed after the holidays. *Referendum sub - committee to be formed. Is V MEMBERS REPORTS: *Joe Kuveikis and Joanne Steele volunteered to be on the Comprehensive Plan Sub- committee, along with Jeff Sabin heading it. *Ronnye Sands and Joe Kuveikis will be our boards representation for Oaks Park Committee. *Concern expressed about the darkness coming into the Riverside parking lot. Handicap parking needed in the front of the building. *The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
