HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes RAB 100494IQ • CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT 4404 BURNS ROAD PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING OCTOBER 4, 1994 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met Tuesday, October 4, 1994 at 7:30 P.M. at the Riverside Community Center. Members present included Chairman Jeff Sabin, John Elsner, Ronnye Sands, Joseph Kuveikif, Joanne Steele, Rick DeKeyser, Y.A.A. Vice President, Councilman Joseph Russo, Susan Miller, Director/Parks and Recreation, and Dick Cameron, Superintendent/Parks. Not present: Sandy • Gottlieb and Bette Bates. I APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: *The minutes from the September 13, 1994 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board were approved as written. *This meeting was attended by a Boy Scout troop from Juno earning their merit badges for Community Involvement. II DIRECTOR'S REPORT: *Program registration is up tremendously. All our centers activities have increased and enrollment for all our leagues are greater than ever. We have replaced Rick Smoliak, Athletic Coordinator, who resigned in June, with Bob Bashwiner. Consequently, we are advertising for a new Aquatic Coordinator. *Teen Programs continue to be popular. The September Teen Dance had 380 participants. Other teen activities include Teen Advisory Board, Pool Nite, Teen Study Room, Teen Sports as part of our Drop In program at our Plant Drive Teen Center. III OLD BUSINESS: *Lighting Lake Catherine will be on the upcoming agenda at city council meetings. Resistance from residents living at Lake Catherine is still a major concern for the Lake Catherine Task Force. Without lighting Lake Catherine our sports programs are in jeopardy. Participation is extremely high and available field usage must be our top consideration. . *In Line Hockey is getting closer to becoming a reality for the city. A resident and owner of Gold's Gym has made a donation and is interested in giving assistance toward a city in line RECOGNIZED AS THE #1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD • hockey rink at PGA National Park. We anticipate other donations and support for this project since there is such a demand for this new sport. *Reminded Y.A.A. to take advantage of the city newsletter for communicating Y.A.A. information. *The city golf course has been renamed Palm Beach Gardens Golf Club and there has been renewed excitement in it. The new professional management team has been successful with their marketing program. Memberships are up and the fees are more competitive and appealing. *Visioning for the city includes looking into the future as a joint effort with city staff to see where the city plans to go with parks and recreation, the comprehensive plan and future development. Jeff Sabin requested that Kim Glas attend one of our meetings to review future development and the comprehensive plan changes for the upcoming year. Our Advisory Board should become active with the visioning process. *Advisory Board wants to receive copies of the Capital Improvements Budget for Parks and Recreation to ascertain the planned changes from '94 to '95. *In reviewing the Oaks and Lake Catherine parkland development plans, we need to be more aware of the impact that may be experienced by adjacent communities. IV NEW BUSINESS: *Y.A.A. will be represented at our Advisory Board Meetings by either the President, Don Babin or the Vice President, Rick DeKeyser. *Softball -- the World Series, will be hosted by Jupiter. Palm Beach Gardens will assist them in any reasonable way possible regarding field usage. • *Seniors Programs continue to be extremely popular. A trip to San Antonio has been planned for the end of November. It is already completely book. There are many day trips, boat rides and bus trips in the next few months along with the regular weekly activities. V MEMBERS REPORTS: *There were no formal members reports. *Miscellaneous topics discussed included the condition of the gym roof, the status of the municipal pool heater, and the aquatic position opening. *General discussion included, future ecosites, parklands out west and a nature trail off of Prosperity Farms Road. *The grant that we had applied for has fallen through. However, the county has committed to a $100,000 grant to be used to light the ballfields. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
