MINUTES
PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
APRIL 5, 1994
The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met Tuesday, April 5,
1994 at 7:30 P.M. at our Riverside Community Center, after touring our new Teen Center at
Plant Drive.
Members present included Chairman Jeff Sabin, Ronnye Sands, John Elsner, Sandy Gottlieb, Jim
Maynor, Susan Miller, Director Parks/Recreation, Dick Cameron, Superintendent/Parks and
Councilman Joseph Russo. Not present: Braxton Melvin, Betsey Yerry, Bette Bates, Alternate,
and Dan Eagle, Y.A.A. President.
• Before the Advisory Board meeting was called to order, Don Babbin gave a presentation on the
need for a permanent Roller Hockey location and for leagues for all ages. His statistics and his
enthusiasm for this program are genuine. We will try to give as much support to this program as
we possibly can. He will be erecting a temporary Roller Hockey Rink at Plant Drive for his
summer program. He is looking for as much support for this program as he can get, Y.A.A.,
Parks and Recreation, and the private sector.
I APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES:
The minutes from the March 1, 1994 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
were approved as written.
II DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
*Councilman Joe Russo was welcomed back to Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
*Public Works Director Bob Patty will be able to give us a schedule for the completion of
the new roof and air conditioning unit at Burns Road Community Center before our next meeting.
We have been told five to six weeks for the air conditioning and an additional three to four weeks
for the completion of the roof.
*Teen Center at Plant Drive Park is now open and will have extended evening and
weekend hours. The teen dances and other activities are well attended and remain popular.
*Comprehensive Plan Status remains unchanged. Susan Miller is trying to strengthen our
relations with the county so that we can work with them one on one. She is requesting that the
40 city drop their objections to the county's level of service in an effort to build a better rapport with
them and as an indication that we can work together.
RECOGNIZED AS THE #1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION
WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD
III OLD BUSINESS:
*Many meetings are being held and the city is actively working on the Master Plan
regarding a new Police Department, a new City Hall, and development of the Klock Property.
Facts and figures must be presented at a council workshop to achieve our goals towards
a November Bond Issue..
*Lake Catherine's lighting plan of action is underway. Meetings with the different
homeowner associations for their approval and meetings with city council will be planned. Impact
fees can be used for funding this under the direction of the city council.
The lighting will have to go out for bid.
*Hockey program was discussed in length prior to this meeting during Don Babbin's
presentation. This is an exceptional program and we would like to see all ages able to participate.
A Task Force was recommended since a permanent site for this activity is needed.
IV NEW BUSINESS:
*Capital Improvement Budget and the city's five year plan will be presented after final
approval. All departments have submitted their plans for consideration.
*We will continue to meet at Riverside at 7:30 P.M. until further notice.
V MEMBERS REPORT:
*The tour of our new Teen Center at Plant Drive Park was enjoyed by all board members
that attended it tonight. Our Teen Coordinator Trish Jensen's hard work should be commended..
*The meeting was adjourned at 9 :30 P.M.
• Respectfully submitted,
Dee Schneider
Administrative Secretary
