MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING May 4, 1993 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met on Tuesday, May 4, 1993 at the Burns Road Community Center. Members present included Chairwoman Ronnye Sands, Ellen Finnerty, Betsey Yerry, Sandy Gottlieb, Jeff Sabin, John Elsner, Braxton Melvin, Council Liaison Eric Jablin. Member(s) not present included: Y.A.A. President Tom Heller. Staff present included: Parks and Recreation Acting Director Sue Ruskay. I APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from the April 6, 1993 meeting were approved by all present with no need of additions or corrections. • II OLD BUSINESS: Acting Director subjects: Sue Ruskay reported and covered the following *The Needs Assessment Survey will be going out on May 17th and returns are being requested by May 28th. *Patty McVay of FPL, a desktop publisher, did an excellent job on our Needs Assessment Survey. A Thank You letter will be written to her expressing thanks from the City and our board. *Summer Camp registration is underway and is expected to total 600. A schedule of activities for camp will be available June 1st. Registrations include both residents and non - residents. *Teen Camp will be held at Gardens Community High School. The original plan for Howell Watkins had to be revised due to other activities scheduled at the same time. It has been suggested that Plant Drive Park be renovated and used for Teen Camp next year. *Field usage study and signage for all our parks discussed. Money would have to be budgeted next year. . *Our permit policy for parks and athletic fields for outside leagues and organizations is being written by our Sports Coordinator and a fee schedule will be set up. RECOGNIZED AS THE #1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD 4W, *Budget for 1993 -1994 will have emphasis on beautification of the city and parks. *Councilman Eric Jablin introduction to Advisory Board members. III NEW BUSINESS: *Kim Glas, Planner from Planning and Zoning is working with Jeff Sabin and Ellen Finnerty, Subcommittee -Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Comprehensive Plan Recreation and Open Space Element. New intern in Planning and Zoning will be working on this with committee. Jeff Sabin will report on this at our next Advisory Board meeting on June 1st. (This date had to be changed to June 8th due to the meeting of Subcommittee -Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Comprehensive Plan in order to meet their deadline.) *Recommendation made that the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and all other Advisory Boards go before City Council to advise what the boards are working on. Each board could a take turn going before City Council. This interaction would be productive and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board feels it is needed not only by us but should also be considered by all committees. Councilman Jablin thought the idea was worthy of further discussion and could be implemented. A packet could be sent to council to update and furnish reports on a regular basis as an option to going before • City Council. *Need for recycle trash cans placed next to regular trash cans brought to our attention. *Complaint about clay and sand mixture on fields discussed and must be addressed. *Parks need evening and weekend coverage by parks employees.
