MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 • 9 E • PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD March 3, 1992 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks & Recreation Advisory Board met on Tuesday, March 3, 1992, at the Community Center. Those present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, John Elsner, Ronnye Sands, Betsey Yerry, Ellen Finnerty, Braxton Melvin, Jeff Sabin, and City Council Liasion Joe Russo. Also in attendance were the new Parks & Recreation Director Bobbie Herakovich, and the, ;Assistant Director Sue Ruskay. The new director, Bobbie Herakovich, introduced herself to everyone. She talked about the Summer Program, Teen Program, fee increases, buses, structure of the program, two week camps, and a supervised program at a park for those who cannot afford the regular program. Mrs. Herakovich asked for recommendations for either a four -two week program or a two -four week program. Mrs. Herakovich said she was asked to present a Summer Program in two weeks to the City Council. She suggested that there should be a counselor training session in CPR and First Aid for the Summer Program. Mrs. Herakovich asked what was the role of the Advisory Board in relation to the City Council. The Board said that they mainly send recommendations to the City Council on matters of Parks & Recreation. Mrs. Herakovich is also trying to analyze the needs of the community. The hours of the Summer Program were discussed. The usual hours are from 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. It was mentioned that there is a need for a "pre camp" and an "after camp" program. The Advisory Board feels very strongly that the _:special camps" are a great idea, plus it would lessen the amount of child- ren in the daily program. The question was raised about raising the minimum age for the counselors, and still keeping the C.I.T. program. Mr. Campbell brought up the subject of the tennis courts, and Mrs. Finnerty brought up the subject of the 17 acres on Burns Road for recreational use and the Regional Park that is to be located west of the city. What happened to these plans? Mrs. Finnerty expressed her interest in main- taining the standard of excellence in the recreational programs. RECOGNIZED AS THE #1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD -2- Tennis Courts: The city is having core samples taken at the courts. They are finding all sorts of things under the courts. They need to dig up the courts and hopefully • fill in to keep the-sink holes from occurring. The City Council voted to resurface the back four courts in asphalt, and hold off on voting on the Hydro Grid courts until this Thursday's meeting. The Advisory Board feels that the 17 acres on Burns Road would be a great place for a tennis complex. Mrs. Ruskay said that the City Council is skeptical of the Hydro Grid because they are so new. The Advisory Board feels.that the Hydro Grid courts would increase mem- bership. An increase in memberships, would mean an in- crease in revenues. Baseball Fields: The P.G.A. Park needs a better fence at the baseball field to keep balls from going into the park- ing lot, and a grass infield. Mrs. Ruskay said that the grass would come next year, and that Public Works is working on the fence problem. Newsletter:. The Advisory Board thought that it was great. The question was raised as to why there was nothing in it about the Y:A.A. No one knew why there was nothing. Gardens Park & Lake Catherine Complex: Mr. Campbell recom- mended that enclosed bulletin boards be put up at these two parks for announcements, standings, etc. Mr. Sabin stressed that the building at Lake Catherine needs to be cleaned. • Mrs. Ruskay said that the Public Works Department is in the process of remedying the drainage problem after the analysis of the fields. Golf Course: Mrs. Sands attended the opening of the new Municipal Golf Course. She said that it was very nice, and that she was surprised that it was not covered by the media. The course is doing very well. Flag Football: Mr. Sabin suggested that the flag football season be moved up to an earlier date. He said that the program was run really well, and the facilities were great. Riverside Center: Mr. Sabin suggested that a Youth L fe meeting should be scheduled at the Riverside Center to get the teens acquainted with the location. It was suggested to invite several teen organizations. Mrs. Herakovich said that she appointed a staff person to check with the teen coordinators at some of the churches to see what their suggestions might be. Mr. Campbell suggested that the meeting time be changed from 7:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Everyone agreed. Meeting was adjourned at 8:35 P.M. • Respectfully submitted, Linda Bullock Administrative Secretary Parks & Recreation Dept.
