MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD February 4, 1992 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met on Tuesday, February 4, 1992, at the Community Center. Those present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, John Elsner, Betsey.Yerry, Ronnye Sands, Braxton Melvin, Ellen Finnerty, and alternate Sandy Gottlieb. Also in attendance were City Council Liasion Joe Russo, and Acting Director Sue Ruskay. Mr. Campbell brought the meeting to order and asked for agenda items. The suggested items were the Summer Program, tennis courts, golf course, and the Y.A.A. • Mr. Campbell expressed his appreciation for the Advisory Boards breakfast. The Advisory Board agreed that it was very nice! Mr. Campbell discussed the fact that the City Council will decide on a new Director for Parks and Recreation this Thurs- day, February 6, 1992. He said that if any of the board mem- bers would like to go to the meeting or write a letter of recommendation they could do so. Mrs. Ruskay gave her qual- ifications and told what she knew about the other candidates. Summer :'Program: The Council wants no limit on the number of children in the program. Mrs. Ruskay suggested that we have two -four week sessions plus "special two week camps, such as sports, dance, art, golf or tennis. These special camps would be at an additional cost. The Summer Program's fee will be raised again this year. The Advisory Board feels that a decision needs to be made soon about the Summer Pro- gram, because we are running short on time. Mrs. Sands suggested that we offer either 4, 6, or 8 week sessions. This plan would also work with the two week special camp concept. ConcE!rn was expressed about having to hire more summer staff and still being able to function with a limited budget that was approved based on last years program. The Advisory Board feels that Mrs. Sands idea would satisfy alot of people. Mrs. Ruskay feels that the children need to be checked in and out, and the counselor /child ratio needs to be smaller. Qualified people would be running the different special camps. RECOGNIZED AS THE ##1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION WINNER OF THE NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD -2- Golf Course: The ribbon cutting will be at 9:00 A.M., Saturday, February 8, 1992. The general concensus is that the course is beautiful but difficult. Tennis Courts: ,Redoing the tennis courts is not on this Thursday nights City Council meeting agenda. Mrs. Ruskay reported that Mr. Orr is concerned about the water supply for the Hydro Grid tennis courts. Mrs. Ruskay called Sea- coast Utilities to see how much the hook up would be for the meter, and they said $16,000. They said it would take 375 gallons of water per court per day. Seacoast suggested hooking up to the Thompson River or tying into the meter at the City Hall Complex. The question was asked if it would be cheaper, because it would be a non - sewage system. There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered concerning this project. Lipton International has approved the Hydro Grid courts for all their courts. Youth Athletic Association: Mr. Melvin said that they are drafting for boys baseball. The coaches clinics went over very well. The move to Little League seemed to be a pos- itive one. Mrs. Sands asked if the condition of the ball - fields has improved. Mrs. Ruskay said that she is working on this project along with the Public Works Department. The Parks & Recreation Department has hired a new night- time supervisor, who is helping with the nighttime leagues . and the part -time staff. We also have the use of the ball fields at the middle schools for practice fields for the Y.A.A. Questions were raised about the nonresidents in the Y.A.A. Mr. Melvin said that Mr. Panaia has all the figures on the nonresidents in the program. Mrs. Finnerty asked if we ever received a written policy on the nonresident issue envolving the city's programs. As of right now, no. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Linda Bullock Administrative Secretary Parks & Recreation Dept.
