MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD June 4, 1991 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met on Tuesday June 4, 1991, at the Community Center. Those present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, Ellen Finnerty, Betsey Yerry, Braxton Melvin, Ronnye Sands, Alternate Sandy Gottlieb, Councilman Joe Russo, and Asst. Director Sue Ruskay. Mr. Campbell opened the meeting by asking for agenda items. One of which was the Riverside building. The Riverside Com- munity Center is right on schedule. The building will be ready for operation on June 17th for the Summer Program. • Supervisor Carolyn Stevens, Secretary Ann Schilling, and Ass't. Director Sue Ruskay will be working out of the Riverside Com- munity Center. Laurie Tanner will replace Ms. Stevens as a Supervisor at the Burns Road facility. Ms. Tanner and Super- visor Mike Kennedy will be Teen Coordinators at Riverside. The Teen Program will begin in the Fall. The Summer Program children will be bused between the two centers, except for the four and five year olds. Advisory Board membership was discussed. The Board has seven members plus one alternate as it stands. The President of the Y.A.A. will be asked to attend the boards meetings. Mr. Campbell asked for a volunteer to be the liaison to the B &E Committee. Ronnye Sands volunteered. Hopefully they will be able to improve the entrance to this Community Center. It has to be something really hardy, because the children will ruin anything else. There can be no rocks as part of the im- provements. The next topic was tennis. The Asst Pro has gone to another facility to teach. Brenda Engle is looking for a replacement. The teams have turned in petitions and surveys requesting clay courts. Hydro -Grid courts are being considered to replace the present courts. The Hydro -Grid courts will.cost about $160,000 • for eight courts. They are very low maintenance, and can be installed over the top of existing courts. Mrs. Ruskay feels sure that our tennis membership will increase if some type of clay courts are installed. RECOGNIZED AS THE #1 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IN THE NATION WINNER OF THE 1989 NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD • 40 2 The new public golf course will be open the end of June, if weather permits. Mr. Russo said that there is problems with elevation at the golf course. Mr. Melvin said that the Y.A.A. is trying to get organized for next year. They are looking at the Little League base- ball program. Mr. Russo brought up again about the nonresident issue. He said that he took the issue back to the City Council. The Council is of the opinion that if there is not enough res- idents to fill the program, than we should cancel that program. The nonresident fee is another issue to be discussed further by the Council. It is to be brought up again at a later date by the Council. Mrs. Ruskay reported on the July 4th celebration. She talked with the Mayor, who agreed that the evening activities only would be the best. The festivities will be at the Gardens Mall.
