PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
January 8, 1991
The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory
Board met on Tuesday, January 8, 1991, at the Community
Center. Those present were Betsey Yerry, John Elsner, Ellen
Finnerty, Jeff Sabin, Braxton Melvin, new member Ronnye Sands,
and new alternate Sandy Gottlieb. The meeting was conducted
by Sue Ruskay, Assistant Director.
The meeting started by Mrs. Ruskay showing everyone the blue-
prints for the new Riverside Community Center. The board
members agreed that they liked the plans. The only area of
• concern was the TV room being too closed in. The Board sug-
gested that glass windows be put in the hallway wall, so the
parents could see out. The lobby will be a bright open area.
The dance program will stay at the Burns Road facility. There
will be no weight room in this center. These plans were drawn
up by Mark Shone. There will be a full service kitchen set up
for cooking classes. It can hold 12 -15 people for cooking
classes. The pre- school program will be in the Riverside Center.
Mrs. Ruskay said she is still trying to get a cushioned floor
in the multi - purpose room. There is nothing that can be done
with.the ceiling at this time. Mrs. Sands suggested that extra
insulation be put between the walls wherever possible. Hope-
fully the building will be ready by the first part of June.
Mr. Orr has seen the plans. Now Mr. Hood needs to go to Mr.
Orr and ask him to present the plans to the City Council.
Nothing can be done until the Council approves the plans,
and then they allocate the funds for this project. If this
building is not ready by the first of June, the Summer Program
will be run like last year, with the use of portables. The
Advisory Board wants to be notified of the Council meeting
when this project will be on the agenda.
Mrs. Finnerty asked where the City stands on the nonresident
issue. Mrs. Ruskay said that there is no yearly fee set. The
Youth Athletic Assoc. and the Recreation Department are charging
• $15.00 nonresident fee. The Y.A.A. are signing up residents
first and then nonresidents. It was suggested that the Y.A.A.
advertise in the Recreation Department Newsletter. There is
still a need for practice areas for baseball and softball.

The City has not set up a yearly nonresident fee as of yet.
• So the fee stands at $15.00 per family per session. All
members wondered if the problem of the nonresident issue is
settled. Mrs. Ruskay and Mr. Melvin agreed that things are
being smoothed out between the City and the Y.A.A.
The problem of parking at Lake Catherine Sports Complex was
brought up again. Cars can park at Watkins Junior High School.
Mrs. Finnerty asked if the Recreation Dept. was getting the
land on Burns Road, behind the Klock building. Mrs. Ruskay
said that the use of this land was put on hold at this time.
Mrs. Finnerty also brought up the proposed new community
center at The Oaks project. Mrs. Ruskay said that these
plans are in negotiations.
Mr. Sabin suggested that the Advisory Board should have an
agenda for projects for the new year, according to priority.
Mr. Elsner said that Mr. Campbell was going to do this
several meetings ago.
Mrs. Finnerty asked about the plans for the Regional Park.
Mrs. Ruskay said that these plans are on hold at the present
time.
Questions about the new city golf course were raised. It
will be run by a private corperation for the first 2 years.
It will be open in a couple of months.
Members of the Board requested copies of the final compre-
hension plan for recreation. Mrs. Finnerty would like the
Board members to get a copy of the Newsletter before they go
out to residents.
Mr. Sabin said that the Arti Gras will be held on Feb. 15 -17.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
