FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD October 2, 1990 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met on Tuesday, October 2, 1990, at the Community Center. Those present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, John Elsner, Betsey Yerry, Ellen Finnerty, City Council Liaison Joe Russo, and the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation Sue Ruskay. Sandy Gottlieb was also in attendance. The Advisory Board first met at 7:00 P.M. at the Riverside building on Riverside Drive. Those present were Director Doug Hood, Chuck Campbell, John Elsner, Betsey Yerry, Ellen • Finnerty, Joe Russo, Sue Ruskay, Chuck Goforth, and Sandy Gottlieb. Mr..Hood took everyone on a tour of the building and followed up with a discussion of the remodeling plans. Everyone went to the Community Center and continued the meeting. Mr. Campbell brought up several suggestions for the new community center. He suggested that more windows be added, enlarge the lobby area, more meeting rooms be added for the community to use, and that the multi - purpose room in the center be divided in half. Mrs. Ruskay ex- plained the many uses for this large multi - purpose room. Mrs. Finnerty suggested more windows also and maybe some skylights. The Board discussed several types of floor coverings for the large multi - purpose room. Everyone agreed that the lobby area should be more open and in- viting and put the T.V. in this area. Mrs. Gottlieb sug- gested a covered drop -off area in the rear of the building. The question was raised about the parking availability across the street on the east side by the railroad tracks. Mr. Russo asked what accomodations were being made for the senior citizens. Mrs. Ruskay said that they are thinking about keeping them at the Burns Road Center. This facility is closer for many of them, plus they have a viable working program here. It is not a year -round program. Mrs. Finnerty suggested taking a survey of the seniors and ask them how • many would use a year -round program. Mr. Campbell suggested the city work something out with the Y.M.C.A. for weight training. Mr. Elsner asked if the large pre- school area needed to be as large as proposed. Mrs. Ruskay reassured everyone that the pre - school programs would use all this area. She also said that Mr. Orr would like to see other uses for this area. Mrs. Ruskay said that the basics for the building are the first priority for the use of the money allotted, which would be the floors, walls, ceilings, wiring, and upgrading the offices. There are plans to put in a large kitchen area for cooking classes as well as other functions. Mrs. Ruskay said that there is a large demand for cooking classes for all ages. • The Board decided to meet again in two their ideas for the Riverside building. it is the Advisory Board's position to put into the building and not to decide is the job of the experts. weeks and bring in Mr. Russo said that suggest things to be the layout, that Mr. Campbell summarized by reading a list of things dis- cussed tonight: 1) Enlarge entrance area, 2) Wellness Program usage and showers, 3) Pre - school area, 4) The circle drive in rear of building, 5) Type of flooring in multi - purpose room, 6) Need to prioritize programs. Mrs. Finnerty suggested that each board member bring in five ideas for the Riverside building to the next meeting. The other board members agreed to this suggestion.
