PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
October 2, 1990
The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory
Board met on Tuesday, October 2, 1990, at the Community
Center. Those present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, John
Elsner, Betsey Yerry, Ellen Finnerty, City Council Liaison
Joe Russo, and the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation
Sue Ruskay. Sandy Gottlieb was also in attendance.
The Advisory Board first met at 7:00 P.M. at the Riverside
building on Riverside Drive. Those present were Director
Doug Hood, Chuck Campbell, John Elsner, Betsey Yerry, Ellen
• Finnerty, Joe Russo, Sue Ruskay, Chuck Goforth, and Sandy
Gottlieb. Mr..Hood took everyone on a tour of the building
and followed up with a discussion of the remodeling plans.
Everyone went to the Community Center and continued the
meeting. Mr. Campbell brought up several suggestions for
the new community center. He suggested that more windows
be added, enlarge the lobby area, more meeting rooms be
added for the community to use, and that the multi - purpose
room in the center be divided in half. Mrs. Ruskay ex-
plained the many uses for this large multi - purpose room.
Mrs. Finnerty suggested more windows also and maybe some
skylights. The Board discussed several types of floor
coverings for the large multi - purpose room. Everyone
agreed that the lobby area should be more open and in-
viting and put the T.V. in this area. Mrs. Gottlieb sug-
gested a covered drop -off area in the rear of the building.
The question was raised about the parking availability
across the street on the east side by the railroad tracks.
Mr. Russo asked what accomodations were being made for the
senior citizens. Mrs. Ruskay said that they are thinking
about keeping them at the Burns Road Center. This facility
is closer for many of them, plus they have a viable working
program here. It is not a year -round program. Mrs. Finnerty
suggested taking a survey of the seniors and ask them how
• many would use a year -round program.

The next subject discussed was the weight room at the River-
side building. Is it big enough, was the big question. It
will be able to be used by all city employees for the Well-
ness Program. Will there be showers available was another
question. Mr. Campbell suggested the city work something
out with the Y.M.C.A. for weight training.
Mr. Elsner asked if the large pre- school area needed to be
as large as proposed. Mrs. Ruskay reassured everyone that
the pre - school programs would use all this area. She also
said that Mr. Orr would like to see other uses for this area.
Mrs. Ruskay said that the basics for the building are the
first priority for the use of the money allotted, which
would be the floors, walls, ceilings, wiring, and upgrading
the offices. There are plans to put in a large kitchen
area for cooking classes as well as other functions. Mrs.
Ruskay said that there is a large demand for cooking classes
for all ages.

Mrs. Finnerty suggested that each board member bring in
five ideas for the Riverside building to the next meeting.
The other board members agreed to this suggestion.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
