MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 RECREATION AND PARKS ADVISORY BOARD September 5, 1989 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met on Tuesday, September 5, 1989, at the Community Center. Those present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, Alan Shisgal, Lynne Bundick, Ellen Finnerty, Betsey Yerry, and John Elsner. Also present were Councilman Joe Russo, Parks and Recreation Director Doug Hood, and Assistant Director Sue Ruskay. Chuck Campbell called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. The first item for discussion was the acquisition of the Naval Reserve Build- ing on Riverside Drive for another Recreation Center. City Council has approved the funds to buy the above mentioned building at $745,000. It has 15,000 square feet. The whole inside will be renovated. There will be a teen facility there and large pro - gramable rooms. The roof has been inspected, and there is about $1500 worth of repair work to be done. Hopefully, this cost will be split with the present owners. Asbestos and Radon tests are being done. The city also has a Structual Engineer checking the building. The air conditioners are in good condition. They hope to make additional parking behind the building on Ironwood Drive. There is also a bike path for easy access for children. This facility will not be a satellite center, it will be a complete center. The money spent on this building will be replenished by the monies from the new JDM project. There are no plans at the present time to expand the Community Center on Burns Road. The second item for discussion was the formation of a Teen Club. It was expressed, that there is a need for this in our community. The Board decided to wait until we close on the Riverside building, before making any more plans or presenting the idea to the teens. The third and fourth items on the agenda were combined. Everyone ,on the board agreed that the city needs more ball fields. They also agreed that the original site plan for the Lake Catherine area was the best. Doug Hood feels that it is a good idea to make the 17 acres on Burns Road into ball fields. It was suggested that maybe a covered pavillion and BBQ grills could be put at this same .complex. Chuck Campbell suggested a raised viewing area by the tennis courts, and some clay tennis courts added to the present tennis facility. "QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU" NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD FINALIST 1987 and 1988 E • Item number five regarding the acquistion of the pool facility at Cabana Colony. The pool facility was inspected by Doug, Sue, and Barbara Reinking, the Aquatics Supervisor. They agreed that it was in good condition. Doug said he was in favor of the ac- quisition, only if Cabana Colony was annexed by Palm Beach Gardens. 0 Item number six concerning the park on Florida Blvd. was described by Doug and Sue as being very run down. Again Doug said that he was only in favor of the acquisition, if Cabana Colony is annexed into Palm Beach Gardens. There was some discussion concerning the Youth Atletic Assoc. Lynne expressed concern about non - residents presiding as director and board members, as well as participants. It was suggested that the Advisory Board meet with Fred Davies, president of the Youth Athletic Assoc. Chuck suggested the need for a northern county traveling soccer team. John expressed the need for new lights at the tennis courts. The present lights are like spot lights, rather than flood lights. John will call Sue with recommendations. There is a correction on the Advisory Board members list. Betsey Yerry's phone number is 622 -5321. Respectfully submitted, Linda Bullock Administrative Secretary Parks & Recreation Dept.
