MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD May 2, 1989 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Department Advisory Board met on Tuesday, May 2, 1989 at the Community Center. Present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, Betsey Yerry, Jeff Sabin, Lynne Bundick, Chuck Goforth, John Elsner. Absent were Ellen Finnerty and Alan Shisgal. Also present were Youth Athletic representative, Donnie Russell, Councilman Joe Russo, and Assis- tant Director, Sue Ruskay. Chairman Chuck Campbell called the meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. and opened by talking about the Comprehensive Plan review. He had attended the review and told the City Council members that the Advisory Board is not comfortable with the number of acres per thousand population. The Board would like to see the city • purchase additional land for parks and recreation. There was a discussion on the proposed JDM addition and the in- creased population this would be for the city. This addition would also bring impact fees to the city. The JDM addition would consist of 62,000 acres. 300 sq. ft. of park per unit is planned but 400 sq. ft. would be needed to meet the 3.5 number recommended by the Board. There was a discussion on the future plans of the MacArthur Founda- tion to release property for sale. A park north of PGA Blvd. would be ideal. Thereis no property designated for parks at this time. It may be adventagous to talk to the City Planner, Rich Walton to get additional information. It was announced that the Advisory Board may want to attend the Comprehensive Land meeting on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Plans for the Summer Program were discussed. The Parks and Recrea- tion Department is renting portables to be able to expand the program. Registration will run from May 30 to June 3 and entrance to the program will be determined by a lottery. There will be a drawing on Monday, June 5. The drawing will include all children in a family. • It was stated that the Parks and Recreation Department needs more that having the present Community Center expanded, new centers are needed in other areas of the city. JUST FOR YOU" NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD FINALIST 1987 and 1988 Solutions for the over - crowded Summer Program were discussed; iincluding having two sessions, sports camps, renting tents, and utilizing the local schools to expand the program. 0 11 The upcoming Dance Recital and the problems for parents of the children participating in the program getting enough tickets for all members of the family to attend this was discussed. A larger place than the auditorium of Palm Beach Gardens High School is needed or an additional performance to meet the demands for attendance of this popular event. The Advisory Board is encouraged to attend City Council meetings and write letters concerning the recreational needs of the city. The need for a Teen Center or a place for teenagers to meet on a regular basis was discussed. The Naval Reserve building that is being considered as a purchase by the city would be an ideal location for a center. Joe Russo stated that he had talked to City Manager, John Orr, on the use of funds for the city. Lynne Bundick stated that some children need an alternative to sports and listed classes and interest groups that the Parks and Recreation Department may want to consider in planning future programs. Plans for the July 4th Celebration were announced by Sue Ruskay. This year the event will be held at the Gardens Mall. The city is also working with the Village of North Palm Beach to combine efforts to have an outstanding day of activities for families. There will be tournaments, bands, a fashion show, clowns, magicians, and game booths. The event will be in a parking lot and the fireworks are planned to be outstanding. There was a discussion on the need for weekend activities for adults and a covered pavillion. The percentages of residents and non - residents for ties was discussed.
