MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD April 4, 1989 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Department Advisory Board met on Tuesday, April 4, 1989 at the Community Center. Present were: Chairman, Chuck Campbell, Jeff Sabin, Alan Shisgal, Ellen Finnerty, Lynne Bundick, Councilman Joe Russo, and Parks and Recreation Assistant Director, Sue Ruskay. Adsent were Betsey Yerry and Chuck Goforth. Chairman Chuck Campbell stated that he attended the first public meeting on the final passing of the Comprehensive Plan for the city. He also sent a letter to the City Council from the Advisory Board requesting consideration of purchase of three parcels of land for future recreational needs. The parcels are: 1. Lake Catherine baseball facility. is 2. Land east of MacArthur Blvd. and south of Howell Watkins Jr. High School. 3. Property east of Gardens Park. There was a discussion of impact fees from the proposed develop- ment in the JDM area. Chuck Campbell stated the neighborhood park figures need to be deleated from the Comprehensive plan as it does not apply to the overall picture. There was a discussion on the proposed enlargement of the Community Center. The council has agreed to have Oliver and Glidden Archi- tects present a rendering of plans for this addition. There was also a discussion of the possiblity of purchasing the Navel Reserve Building on Riverside Drive and using that facility for Recreation. Additional park properties and figures of ideal population per recreation acreage was discussed. A large tract of land of 60 to 70 acres would be needed for an additional park to house a new recreation center and sports facilities for the projected popula- tion growth of Palm Beach Gardens. Council Joe Russo stated the Board should get a letter to the City Council stating exactly what is needed and methods of raising funds • for these needs. "QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... Lynne Bundick will obtain percentage figures for the various class • and program participation of resident and non - residents. Chuck Campbell stated he had a letter from the Renagades team and they would be performing in the area. Sue Ruskay stated she is working on the final plans for the upcoming Summer Program. The idea of using some of the local school facilities will not work out because of the summer school and the problems with busing. The Parks and Recreation Department hope to rent space master portables to be able to expand the program. The meeting was dismissed at 9:35 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Sellers Secretary • •
