MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 (407) 775 -8270 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD February 14, 1989 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Department Advisory Board met on Tuesday, February 14, 1989, in the Conference Room of the Community Center. Present were Chair- man Chuck Campbell, Betsey Yerry, Alan Shisgal, Lynne Bundick, and Parks and Recreation Assistant Director, Sue Ruskay. Absent were Jeff Sabin, Art Kaminski, and Ellen Finnerty. Chairman Chuck Campbell stated there were two potential agenda matters; the meeting on Wednesday, February 15 in the City Council chambers concerning the Recreation and Open Space portion of the City's Comprehensive Plan and the plans for the Summer Program. • Sue Rusk,ay said that because of the uncertainty of the use of the schools, plans for the summer program are indefinate until March. The Navel Reserve building that the city is looking into to possibly purchase, would not be available until after August so would not be considered for use for the summer. The high school and Jr. high school are both planning to have summer sessions and the Parks and Recreation Department may only have use of those facilities in the after- noons. There may be a possible way to use some of the portables for the summer program. There is also a problem with the use of the county school buses. They are no longer available for the city'suse and private buses are expensive and not completely reliable. Space will not allow all the children in Palm Beach Gardens to attend the summer program even if it is divided into two four -week sessions. Chuck Campbell requested that the areas between the ballfields at the Lake Catherine complex be blocked off with logs as a safety factor for that facility. The Advisory Board is requested to attend the meeting Wed. February 15 in the Council Chambers for the Recreation and Open Space part of the Comprehensive Plan. Some items for discussion should be ratio of population and land for rec- reation use, open space, specific locations for recreation • and a new regional park. There is a need for a quality map showing bike trails and park sites. "QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU" NATIONAL GOLD MEDAL AWARD FINALIST 1987 and 1988 1 O The city may want to consider working with the county to have • a specialized park. There is a need for golf courses, a second pool, and outdoor volleyball courts. It was pointed out that the planners need to spend time with the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The needs of the city and future plans may be easier is the'city is divided in sectors similar to the Boca Raton plan. The Palm Beach Gardens plan also needs to have better tables and a conclusion in their writeup to state the future goals. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Sellers Secreatary 11 •
