PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
November 29, 1988
The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Department
Advisory Board met on Tuesday, November 29, 1988, at the Commu-
nity Center at 7:30 p.m.
Present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, Betsey Yerry, Lynne Bundick,
Jeff Sabin, Art Kaminski, Parks and Recreation Assistant Director,
Sue Ruskay, and guest, Jeff Renault of the Beautification and
Environmental Committee.
Jeff Renault showed the Board a blueprint of the proposed land-
scaping plan for the front of the Community Center. This plan
calls for trees and shrubs that would enhance the appearance,
give needed shade, and direct pedestrian traffic to walkways.
• The plan has an estimated cost of $30,000.00 and will be put
out for bid in January and start in March. The B and E Committee
hopes to work with the Advisory Board and Parks and Recreation
Department on the plan for landscaping. The plan does not in-
clude irrigation of additional plantings.
Mr. Renault stated that the city has a code for landscaping
requirements for new residential areas and businesses and we should
set an example by having adequate landscaping for all municipal
buildings. There are also plans to landscape the City Hall
and possibly Public.Works.
Jon Isles, assistant Supervisor of Parks and Forestry for the
city, is working with the Beautification and Environmental Com-
mitee. He suggests using native plantings wherever possible
and suggests placing cabbage palms around the jogging trails
and shade trees around the ballfields. Traffic flow and visibi-
lity are also a consideration.
Chairman Campbell stated the letters from the Advisory Board
were distributed to the Mayor and City Council. Sue Ruskay
said she would call to see if the letters may be discussed at
the next Council meeting.
There was a discussion on the pros and cons of a city wide ques-
tionaire to find the needs and wants in the recreation field
of the residents of Palm Beach Gardens. It was decided to not
go ahead with this plan at this time.
"QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU"
• A large map of Palm Beach Gardens -was placed on the table and
there was a discussion of various property that might be pur-
chased by the city for recreation and parks development. It
was decided the important areas for the near future would be
the expansion of the Community Center and obtaining the Klock
property.
There were discussions on the plan to utilize the schools for
the Summer Program, brighter lighting for the joggings trail,
and where we are going with specialized sports teams. There
will be a letter drafted to Doug Hood and supervisors concerning
the sports teams.
Sue Ruskay was asked about the progress of hiring a new Tennis
Pro for the city. Sue stated applications are being taken and
hopefully, the position will be filled by Jan. 1, 1989. Because
of the holidays, many of the practices and lessons are cancelled.
The new Tennis pro will have a yearly contract and will be res-
ponsible for their own assistant pro, the organization of teams,
leagues, coaching and lessons.
Lynne Bundick complimented the Parks and Recreation Department
on the 1st annual Holiday Spirit Parade that was held November
19th. There was a good turnout and hopefully, the parade will
be even better next year.
• Sue Ruskay stated that there is now a full time City Planner
that the board could work with for future expansion and the
planning of a regional. park.
It was decided that Lynne Bundick would extend and invitation
to Mimi Howard, of Resourse Engineering and Planning, to attend
the next Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. This meeting
is planned for Tuesday, January 10, 1989.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:20
p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
