MILITARY TRAIL PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL 33410 627 -2558 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD November 8, 1988 The Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Department Advisory Board met on Tuesday, November 8, 1988 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Center. Present were Chairman Chuck Campbell, Lynne Bundick, Jeff Sabin, Art Kaminski, Ellen Finnerty, Alan Shisgal, Chuck Goforth, YAA President Fred, Davies, and Parks and Recrea- tion Assistant Director, Sue Ruskay. Absent were Betsey Yerry and Al McKenna. Chairman Campbell called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. There was a discussion on the expansion of the Community Center. It was decided that the City Council should receive a letter requesting an architectural study of the Community Center, • the best plan for expansion and the estimated cost. The City Council should also receive a letter recommending a bond issue be put to the voters for the March election. It was also decided to put off the recommendation for a lap pool adjacent to the present Municipal Swimming Pool at this time. Even if the bond issue passes, additional facilitites would not be completed in time for the summer program in June 1989. Assistant Parks and Recreation Director, Sue Ruskay, stated the Recreation Department is working with the schools in the area to possibly utilize additional facilities to accomodate more of the youth in the city. Chuck Campbell stated that the MacArthur Foundation is opening up some property for sale. The ballfields at Lake Catherine and the possible land swap was discussed. YAA president, Fred Davies stated that only half the scheduled ballgames could be played on other facilities and the loss of the Lake Catherine fields would greatly cut into practices as well. He also stated that the Youth Athletic Association will approach members to see about cleaning up the present facilities. Parents can work to make the fields presentable as long as they are avai- lable for the community's use. The proposed Regional Park was discussed. Hopefully, developers coming to the city will donate property for a new facility. "QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU" s Ellen Finnerty stated the board should identify the needs of the recreation facilities that might be included in a regional park. There should be spacific plans in writing. The new development at JDM was discussed. As this is a private development, recreation facilities in this area would also be private. With the recent death of Tennis Pro, Alyce Marshall, the Parks and Recreation Department is advertising and taking resumes for a new tennis manager. The Department hopes to find a person that will make the tennis facility active for all interested persons in the community. Hopefully this position will be filled by December. The Soccer program was discussed. The travel teams and all - star teams were discussed. There seems to be a need for guide- lines for these special teams. The city perhaps could work with the county for those individuals who excel and are inter- ested in Soccer. The schools have good programs for outstanding athletics to move up to but travel teams could go beyond the season for each sport. The meeting was cut short by an accidental fire alarm what • was set off by the Spotlite players that were rehearsing in the auditorium. Respectfully submitted, Linda Sellers Secretary •
