PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD
September 6, 1988
The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Department
Advisory Board met on Tuesday, September 6, 1988, in the Exercise
Room of the Community Center. Present were Chairman Chuck
Campbell, Betsey Yerry, Ellen Finnerty, Lynne Bundick, Alan
Shisgal, Jeff Sabin, Chuck Goforth, and Parks and Recreation
Assistant Director, Sue Ruskay. Absent was Art Kaminski.
Chairman Campbell called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m.
and presented the members with an agenda and outline of items
to be a guideline for the September 20, 1988, meeting with
the City Council. This is a Council Workshop meeting that
will be at the Community Center at 7:30 p.m.
. The 7 page Workshop Agenda package was discussed and items
were prioritized for presentation. There were ideas on ways
to present the plan. It was decided the Council should receive
a copy of an agenda in advance of the Workshop.
It was decided the three most important items for discussion
are: 1. Community Center Expansion
2. Land Aquisition
3. Future Regional Park and Community Center
The Community Center expansion would include the addition
of 10,000 square feet which would include new meeting rooms,
offices, and classrooms. Hopefully, the funding for this
addition could come from the Recreation Land Use Funds. The
board would request that this addition be completed in time
for the 1989 Summer Program in June. Requesting a lap pool
to be added adjacent to the Municipal Swimming Pool was also
discussed.
Land Aquisition would include resolving the Lake Catherine
area and the deplorable condition of the baseball fields
there. It would also include the request to purchase the
property behind the Klock building for future development.
There was discussion on the need for a Teen Center, the programs
that are presently run by the Youth Athletic Association,
and the Parks and Recreation Department utilizing the facilities
at Palm Beach Gardens High School and at Howell Watkins Jr.
"QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU"
• High School for additional space for the over - crowded Summer
Enrichment Program. Hopefully, next summer's program can
be planned for facilities that will enable all children
in Palm Beach Gardens to participate.
There was also a discussion on the County parks in the area
and the possibility of additional parks in this area and
the idea that there may be grants available for land aquisi-
tion.
Chairman Campbell will make charts with an outline and infor-
mation about requests from the Board. He will also have
an agenda mailed to the Board members and City Council members.
Information on costs and funding will come from Parks and
Recreation Director, Doug Hood.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Sellers
