MILITARY TRAIL • PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA 33410. 627 -2558 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD April 5, 1988 The Parks and Recreation Department Advisory Board met Tuesday, April 6, 1988 in the Conference Room of the Community Center. In attendance were Chairman Chuck Campbell, Betsey Yerry, Art Kaminski, Mayor Dick Feeney, and Parks and Recreation Department Assistant Director Sue Ruskay. There was a discussion on attendance of members to Advisory Board meetings and increasing the number of members for future meetings. Dick Feeney stated the Palm Beach Gardens Youth Athletic Association should be represented at the meetings even though Chairman Chuck Campbell is associated with that or- ganization. Mayor Feeney stated the Advisory Board should contact City Clerk Linda Hino to obtain the names of persons that may be interesting in serving on the Advisory Board. Chuck Campbell wrote a letter to the City Council with suggestions for future plans for the Parks and Recreation Department. The need for additional facilities and land was discussed. Mayor Feeney stated if the recreation programs were closed to non - residents, much of the sug- gested expansion may not be needed at this time. He went on the state that the county should provide services for those not living within the city limits. The plans for the summer program were discussed. The program expands from six to eight weeks and will run from 9 until 12 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Residents will be allowed to register first and the program will be limited in number. Sue Ruskay stated there will be inside and outdoor activities as well as movies and bus trips. The local elemantary schools will be running a summer day camp were they will charge $60. per week. The Parks and Recreation summer program will cost between $60. - $75. for the eight week program. "QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU" Chairman Campbell stated he would like to see the City Council purchase land for recreation expansion in the future. Dick Feeney said there has been discussion of a city golf course. It was stated that the ball fields at the parks are overused and with so many recreation programs, there is little time for maintenance. The Lake Catherine development and additional fields south of Howell Watkins Jr. High School may be in the planning stages soon. The quality of the Youth Athletic Association's running of the baseball program was discussed. There are few volunteers running the program and the director's position is overworked. Presently there is no concession program at the Lake Catherine fields. Mayor Feeney stated that the city may have to step in and hire a director. It was suggested that Chairman Chuck Campbell send a letter to the City Council to set up a meeting with the Advisory Board the first part of June. The board should be able to discuss short term priorities and future needs of the Parks and Recreation Department. Future annexation of additional lands would affect the department's needs and this also needs some planning. • The possibility of building a city library was discussed. The city is paying a very large fee to the county for use of inadequate facilities and it would be advantageous cost wise to build and run our own facility. 0 M The Advisory Board will meet May 3rd to draft a final letter to the City Council and ask for a joint meeting in June. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Sellers Secretary Parks and Recreation Department CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS
