MILITARY TRAIL -PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA 33410. 627 -2558 PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD February 2, 1988 The City of Palm Beach Gardens Parks and Recreation Department Advisory Board met on Tuesday, February 2, 1988, in the Com- munity Center. Present were: Chairman Chuck Campbell, Betsey Yerry, Art Kaminski, and Ellen Finnerty. Absent was Cindy Cody, David Kanter, Kevin Feeney, and City Council liaison, Dick Feeney. Also in attendance was Sue Ruskay, Assistant Director of the Parks and Recreation Department. Chairman Chuck Campbell called the meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. and presented an agenda for discussion. Chuck Campbell stated that he had hoped to have a meeting with the City Contract Planner to discuss future plans for recrea- tion by this date and have a letter to the City Council with recommendations from the Advisory Board. The City residents will be voting on a proposed annexation plan that will extend the boundary lines of Palm Beach Gardens. If this plan is passed, the additional population and land area will require expansion of recreational facilities for the city. Recommen- dations to the City Council would have to wait until this vote is decided. Ellen Finnerty suggested that the Chairman draft a letter to the City Council with recommendations from the Advisory Board and a final letter will be discussed at the next board meeting. These recommendation would include obtaining the property behind the Klock Company and Community Center expansion. The Youth Athletic Association basketball and baseball program was discussed. The YAA Board voted to run their own basketball program instead of having the Recreation Department take it over. The first appointed director did not work out and had to be replaced. Julie Mojica is running that program now. A major part of the upcoming baseball program will be run by women volunteers. "QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU" • Some of the problems at PGA Park were discussed. The water fountain now has a step for youngsters and there is no longer a problem with a locked gate on weekends. The long grass is still a problem and cannot be eliminated without being replaced. The lights at the public tennis courts was discussed as well as the need for the replacement of shrubs around the back tennis courts. It was suggested that new lights could be installed at the public tennis courts when additional light- ing is added to the Gardens Park softball fields. Sue Ruskay explained how the Summer Tennis Program will be run. This will be seperate from the Community Center Summer Program; the tennis will be run by Alyce Marshall, Tennis Pro and Jim Gignilliat, assistant Tennis Pro. The swim program will also be seperate - this way those that are interested in these programs can sign up instead of having it as part of the Summer Program. Chuck Campbell stated he would like to invite interested residents to apply as members of the Advisory Board. He would like to see the members increase from seven to possi- bably eleven. Chairman Campbell also stated he would like to see a questionaire in the newsletter to see if the Parks and Recreation Department is meeting the needs of the resi- dents. There was a discussion on the need to have a city library. The county library is just too small for the growing popu- lation. It was mentioned that both North Palm Beach and Lake Park have libraries with nice facilities that include meeting rooms. This would be helpful in eliminating some of the demand for space at the Community Center. Because the results of the annexation will not be known until after the March 8 election, it was decided the next meeting would be April 5th. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Sellers Secretary
