The would like to make a list to be considered for future Another item for discussion is the Youth Athletic Association and the problems this volunteer group is having with its sports programs. Under old business, some minor needs at parks in the city were discussed. Those include: The water fountain at PGA National Park needs some steps for pre- school children. The fields at PGA National Park are locked on week- ends and holidays and the board would like these to be open to the public. The Bahia grass on the soccer fields and softball out - fields is so high the balls will not roll. The ground under the grass is spongy and it is hard to get good footing. Sue Ruskay stated these items should be brought to the attention of the Parks and Recreation Director, Doug Hood. Ellen Finnerty asked about additional tables and grills for the area around "Playscape" and Sue Ruskay stated these items are • in the new budget and will be ordered in the near future. Additional playground equipment will also be ordered, as well as the remainding lights for the softball fields at Gardens Park. "QUALITY LEISURE SERVICES ... JUST FOR YOU" Kevin Feeney stated that the basketball courts at Plant • Drive Park are in poor condition. The surface needs attention, the rims are bent, and nets'are missing. It was suggested that metal nets be welded on to try to alleviate the constant theft of the nylon nets. Art Kaminiski stated that the lights on the public tennis courts by Military Trail need replacing. Sue Ruskay said the shrubs around the membership.tennis courts are in the process of being replaced. Chuck Campbell brought up the condition of the soccer fields at Gardens Park. The grass does not seem to be maintained and there are numerous weeds and bare spots. There was a discussion on the problem of overcrowded programs and the limited enrollment of some of the more popular pre- school classes at the Community Center. It comes down to the fact that there is not space for additional classes and programs. The use of lights at Gardens Park for soccer practice at night was discussed. Chuck Campbell said he would like information on the cost per hour to have the lights on. Either the teams that want to practice at night could pay this fee or the registration fees for the • soccer program could be raised to cover this expense. Chuck Campbell reported on a recent YAA meeting he attended. The YAA is having problems obtaining volunteers for all their open positions. Their programs have grown so that now the directors of the sports must work constantly to to have things run smoothly. The question was raised - should the Parks and Recreation Department play a role in the organization of some of the YAA's programs? The YAA wants to direct its own organization; however they may not have a basketball program without a director. It was decided the YAA will have to approach the Parks and Recreation Director, Doug Hood, to request any help with their programs. The Advisory Board would like to discuss future recreational needs with the City Planner. Some facilities and improve- ments may include: The purchase of the property behind the Klock Co. A city golf facility. A new swimming pool. Expand the present tennis facilities. • Additional athletic areas. A new regional center. Expansion of the present Community Center. Ellen Finnerty suggested that the Advisory Board send a • letter to the City Council recommending a few items for future consideration instead of a long list. It was decided that the time dependent item is the purchase of the property behind the Klock Co. Chair- man Chuck Campbell stated he would draft a letter to the Council with this recommendation. Hopefully, the next Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting will be with the City planner to discuss the needs of the department. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Sellers Secretary i •
