HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes EAB 031302CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD MARCH 13, 2001 The March 13, 2002, Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board was called to order at 7:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Complex located at 1050o North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The roll was called and the following members were found to be in attendance: Chair Wayne Anderson, Anne Berg, John Gardner, Judith Hanrahan, Jim Panoch, Jan Porter, Ron Sadaka, and Charlotte Schiff. City Council Liaison Vice Mayor Eric Jablin arrived at 7:15 p.m. Student Julie Hackman was also present. Chair Anderson reported some schools were losing teachers. Discussion ensued. The minutes from the February 13, 2002 meeting were approved as submitted. Committee Reports Curriculum — A letter from Dr. Orr, the guest speaker last month, was read. It was noted that a list of schools that would be open for lunch for the summer had been obtained and would cover all areas. A booklet listing all schools was available in the lobby. School Board Forum — Mr. Panoch reported discussion regarding what to do about expelled students. The location of the new Riviera Beach school had also been discussed. SAC Meeting Reports Allamanda Elementary - Wayne Anderson reported the children had sold candy and earned $700+ which would be used to purchase playground equipment. The number of computers used at the school was discussed. A spaghetti dinner and a carnival were to be held. Education Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes 3/13/02 Palm Beach Gardens Elementary — Discussion of attendance and dress code was reported. Timber Trace Elementary -Ron Sadaka reported two meetings had been held, a PBS Show would be shot at the school, and the school improvement plan was being finalized. Watson B. Duncan Middle — An incident which resulted in expulsion and suspension of some students was reported. Problems with the dress code were reported. Palm Beach Gardens High — City Councilman Jablin reported the kids had raised $2,000. William T. Dwyer High Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts — Art Johnson was scheduled to visit the school. Old Business Criteria for Monthly Award — Suggestions: In order for eligibility a nominee must meet high standards of excellence in one of the 13 schools watched over by the Education Advisory Board. Some of the requirements noted were that nominees must be a resident of Palm Beach Gardens, could be a student volunteer or teacher, and must demonstrate a superior ability to foster excellence in education, contribute to student learning in the school environment, and be unpaid for their efforts. Those selected would be honored at a City Council meeting and at a banquet. A recommended selection process was discussed. MOTION: Motion was made and seconded to accept the overall criteria for the monthly award as recommended by Chair Anderson. Motion passed by unanimous vote. Two nominees, Carolyn Drummond and Joan Collette, which had been submitted by the Principal at Timber Trace were discussed. MOTION- Page 2 Education Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes 3/13/02 Motion was made and seconded to select Joan Collette to receive the award, to be given at the first available April City Council meeting. New Business City Council Liaison Eric Jablin asked if there was any interest in attending the spring play at School of the Arts as a group. Several members indicated they would like to attend. Adjournment There was no further business, therefore the meeting was adjourned. Page 3
