EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD
May 8, 2002
The May 8, 2002, Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens
Education Advisory Board was called to order at 7:06 P.M. in the Council
Chambers of the Municipal Complex located at 1050o North Military Trail,
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The roll was called and the following members were found to be in attendance:
Chair Wayne Anderson, Anne Berg, John Gardner arrived at 7:31 p.m., Ilene
Gerber, Judy Hanrahan, Nancy Krause- Laurie, Jim Panoch, Jan Porter arrived
at 7:10, Ron Sadaka arrived at 7:11 p.m., Charlotte Schiff, and Helen Zientek.
City Council Liaison Mayor Eric Jablin was also present.
It was reported that the recording system had failed at the last meeting and
there were no minutes.
Scott Porter, a candidate for School Board District 1, addressed the Board.
Committee Reports
Curriculum - Charlotte Schiff reported on sites for the summer lunch program,
which needed volunteers. The problem of school busses picking up children
too late for the breakfast program was discussed, and ideas were requested.
School Board Forum — Mr. Panoch reported the new grading system had been
discussed. Jan Porter reported in school and out of school suspensions had
been discussed. Instituting the black history program into the schools was
also discussed.
SAC Meeting Reports
Allamanda Elementary - Wayne Anderson reported he had been unable to
attend the SAC but had helped his wife with a math conference.
Palm Beach Gardens Elementary — Anne Berg reported an anticipated large
population growth had been discussed, as well as project 9, school

improvement plan revisions, and dress code.
Timber Trace Elementary - Ron Sadaka reported new report cards had been
discussed and passed around an example. A new format for the school
improvement plan had been instituted. Concern regarding a second access to
the school was discussed, and Mayor Jablin commented the City Council
would do what would benefit the most people.
H. L. Watkins Middle - The representative to this SAC, Mr. Kakli, had
resigned the Board due to a heavy work load which did not allow him to attend
meetings. Mayor Jablin reported this school was sited for a major make -over
and that he was on the selection committee.
Watson B. Duncan Middle — There was no report.
School of the Arts Middle — There was no report.
Palm Beach Gardens High — It was reported a new policy was in effect that if
students were not in class by 7:45 a..m. they lost their right to be in that class
for the day. An apple gram program for teachers had been discussed.
William T. Dw ey r High — School population in light of new development was
discussed.
Suncoast — There was no report.
Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts — Work had been done on an
accreditation program
Inlet Grove — A dinner had been held in April. It was reported that this school
would probably be assimilated into the new Riviera Beach High School, with
the current campus becoming an alternative education site.
Old Business
Volunteer Award — Mayor Jablin reported the award to Joan Collette had been
made. It was requested that Board members attend City Council metings when

awards were presented. Carolyn Drummond was nominated for the next
award. Discussion ensued regarding sending press releases to WeekDay and
reporting the awards in the Neighborhood Post. Mayor Jablin reported the
next presentation would be made at the June 6 City Council meeting. Paula
Skowronek was nominated for future selection.
New Business
A forum for local School Board District 1 candidates was proposed, to be held
the second Wednesday in August.
Helen Zientek reported she had attended the Governor's conference on
education. Chair Anderson reported attending a teacher's conference in Las
Vegas. Jan Porter reported on her work over the past four years with a student
to improve reading skills.
Adjournment
There was no further business, therefore the meeting was adjourned.
