HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes EAB 061202CITY OF PALM BEACH GARDENS EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD June 12, 2002 The June 12, 2002, Regular meeting of the City of Palm Beach Gardens Education Advisory Board was called to order at 7:00 P.M. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Complex located at 1050o North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The roll was called and the following members were found to be in attendance: Chair Wayne Anderson, Anne Berg, Judy Hanrahan, Jim Panoch, Jan Porter, Ron Sadaka and Helen Zientek. City Council Liaison Mayor Eric Jablin was also present. Helen Zientek made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 8, 2002 meeting as amended. Jan Porter seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous vote. Amendments were addition under new business that Helen Zientek attended the Governors conference on education and addition of a report by another member. The guest speaker discussed school improvement and school advisory councils. A candidate running for School Board District One, Monroe Benain, was advised regarding the upcoming forum and provided information about himself. There were no Committee Reports. SAC Meeting Reports Allamanda Elementary - Wayne Anderson reported their school improvement plan would have to be redone. Palm Beach Gardens Elementary — Anne Berg reported she had been unable to attend due to illness. Timber Trace Elementary - Ron Sadaka's report included review of response Education Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes 6/12/02 regarding the report cards, and discussion had been held regarding the need to restrict parents from bringing friends or siblings when they come for lunch with their child because of liability issues. H. L. Watkins Middle - There was no report. Watson B. Duncan Middle — Lack of supervision was discussed. School of the Arts Middle — Changes in by -laws was discussed, and the SAC had been asked to approve funding for a program. Palm Beach Gardens High — A new lateness policy was discussed. The policy to pay for teacher training was discussed. William T. Dwyer High — There was no report. Suncoast — There was no report. Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts — An incident regarding an election was reported. Work had been done on the accreditation project. Another incident was reported that class rankings of graduating seniors were incorrect because the person in charge of all the teachers did not turn in grades in time. Inlet Grove — There was no report. Old Business Volunteer Award — The last award was discussed volunteered at Palm Beach Gardens Elementary, award. New Business . Paula Skowronek, who was selected for the next Cards to fill out for Ed Garcia, a School Board candidate, were distributed. Questions to be asked the candidates participating in the forum in August were discussed. A suggestion was made to ask where the candidates stood on the Page 2 Education Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes 6/12/02 constitutional amendment to reduce class size. It was decided to e -mail suggestions for questions to Helen Zientek. The forum date was set for August 21, to be held in the City Council chambers. An invitation letter and press release were discussed. It was decided to ask Jim Wicks to moderate at the forum. Appointment of a new member of the Board was discussed. A July meeting to finalize forum plans was set for July 17, the third Wednesday in July. School rankings were reported. Jim Panoch reported the School Board was considering the budget. Mayor Jablin discussed publicity for the candidate forum. Adjournment There was no further business, therefore the meeting was adjourned. Page 3
